OSWEGO HIGH SCHOOL

BOYS VOLLEYBALL INFORMATION

THE COACHING STAFF WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME YOU TO THE VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM AT OHS. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO A FUN AND EXCITING YEAR. OUR PRIMARY GOAL IS TO HELP THESE BOYS FEEL SUCCESSFUL IN ATHLETICS AS WELL AS IN THE CLASSROOM. TO BE A PART OF THIS PROGRAM EACH ATHLETE AND PARENTS MUST ALWAYS TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE FOLLOWING:

1. ACADEMICS always come first. The athlete's grades and actions in class reflect the hard work and the high standards that are also expected in athletic competition. The coaches expect all homework and other assignments to be completed and turned in on time. Effective time management is essential during the season. The coaching staff expects every athlete to bring homework with them to away games. There is time before or after their match while the other teams are playing to do homework. Numerous resources are available to help athletes succeed at academics: such as tutoring, before school review sessions and one on one meetings with teachers. We enforce the Illinois High School Association athletic eligibility requirements (No Pass, No Play) on a weekly basis. These requirements are stated in the OHS General Athletics Rules and Guidelines. Athletes need to talk with their coaches if they are struggling in a class in order to find a successful solution to the problem.

2. CODE OF CONDUCT - As all OHS athletes, you must uphold the code of conduct, which states that you will refrain from using alcohol, drugs and tobacco during the entire year. Use of any of these will not be tolerated.

3. PRACTICES - The specific purpose of practice is to prepare you for the situations that occur in competition. Practice is a time to transform a group of individuals into a team in order to achieve maximum potential. Each practice must be viewed as an opportunity to improve. It is imperative that the atmosphere in the gym be one of concentration, intensity, and attention to the task at hand. Practice is an opportunity to leave your personal life outside of the gym and work with your teammates and coaches to better your team as a whole.

Practice schedules are available from the OHS BVB Coaching Staff

Saturday practices are at the coaches’ discretion

(Unless otherwise announced)

4. HOME GAMES - We ask that all volleyball team members be present for all levels of play. Besides job responsibilities and taking statistics, athletes learn from watching. We are also our best fans. Dedication to the team concept helps a team grow strong.

5. AWAY GAMES - All athletes ride the bus to and from away matches. The only excuse for not riding the bus with the team will be if your son has another school function. In this case, the following procedures must be followed:

a.)A written note from a parent with an explanation must be presented at least a day in advance to the coach; and

b.)Direct parental contact with the coach must be made before the athlete leaves the contest. No athlete will be allowed to leave with anyone other than his own parents. While we honor your academic responsibilities, we will not accept homework as an excuse to leave a match with parents. Please plan accordingly.

6. DRESS - Each team will decide on what they are going to wear on match days. The penalty for not wearing the appropriate attire will be sitting the bench for the first game of the contest. The athlete will sit the entire match for not having all of his uniform(s) or shoes with him on the day of a match.

7. ATTENDANCE - The only excuse from a practice or match is a legitimate absence from school. Plan on scheduling appointments around practice and match times. It is the OHS Boys Volleyball Programand Athletic Department policy that a student must be in attendance for 4 periods in a school day in order to be eligible to practice OR play in that same day. (Prior approval must be made by the athletic office for college visits or doctors appointments.) If an athlete misses the practice the night before a match, he will not play in the first set of the match (Emergency or unusual situations can be reviewed on a case by case basis). If an athlete is too ill to attend school, it is assumed he is too ill to play or practice. If an athlete does not feel well and is in school, he is expected to report to practice and observe what is taught even though he may not be physically active. If an athlete will be late for practice because he is receiving help from a teacher, a pass is required to get into practice. Unexcused tardies will have consequences determined by the coach. Unexcused absences from practices will result in 1) warning 2) sit a game 3) sit a match and 4) removal from the team. If an athlete misses an entire match or tournament due to an unexcused absence, he will sit out the next scheduled match he is in attendance. Missing a practice or match due to club sports is considered an unexcused absence.

8. EQUIPMENT - Each player is issued a short-sleeve game jersey and a pair of shorts. All of these items are expected to be returned in good, clean condition. It would be greatly appreciated if you washed everything on delicate to prevent fading. All athletes will purchase a game T-shirt and/or a team shirt that will be used for either matches or can be worn on game days to let people know the volleyball team has a match. Kneepads and volleyball shoes are required.

9. QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS – If any parent has questions or concerns about their son and/or the volleyball team, we would like them to follow these steps:

a.)Have son talk with his coach (usually this can straighten everything out)

b.)Have the parent and son talk with his coach

c.)Have the head varsity coach talk with the parent, son, and coach

As the head coach, my door is always open and I am willing to talk with anyone about any concerns or questions. Please do not approach a coach right before or during a match or tournament. After practice is the best time to talk to a coach. ALL meetings are by appointment only and must be attended by guardian(s) and player(s) alike.

WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO A SUCCESSFUL AND FUN SEASON!
