Nouns (los sustantivos)

·  Nouns refer to people, places, things, or ideas.

·  In Spanish, nouns have gender. This means they can be masculine or feminine

·  Most nouns that end in –o are masculine, and most nouns that end in –a are feminine. (there are exceptions)

·  Nouns that don’t end in –o or –a can be masculine or feminine. (el cine, la clase. el lapiz)

·  In English, there is one definite article, “the”. In Spanish, there are four. El, la, los, las.

·  If the noun is masculine and singular we use “el”. “El auto”. (the car)

·  If the noun is masculine and plural, we use “los”. “Los autos” (the cars)

·  If the noun is feminine and singular, we use “la”. “la uva” (the grape)

·  If the noun is feminine and plural, we use “las”. “las uvas” (the grapes)

·  In English, there are two indefinite articles, “a” and “an”. In Spanish, there are four. un, una, unos, unas

·  If the noun is masculine and singular we use “un”. “Un auto” (a car)

·  If the noun is masculine and plural we use “unos” “Unos autos” (some cars)

·  If the noun is feminine and singular we use “una” “Una uva” (a grape)

·  If the noun is feminine and plural we us “unas” “Unas uvas” (some grapes)

·  If you are not sure if the noun is masculine or feminine, use a dictionary. It will say m or f for masculine or feminine.
