Who can enroll a student in school?

  1. Parent or Legal Guardian or Person with legal or physical custody

A child who enrolls in school must reside with his/her custodial adult. Custody is defined

by board policy as “legal or court ordered custody.” If custody is awarded to two different

parents (joint) , the child must attend the attendance zone school of the parent with

whom the student is permanently domiciled. If no one is designated as the primary

custodian then there must be a notarized statement stating agreement by both parties

as to the school placement of the child. Unless there is a hardship as defined by 115C-366

or the Board of Education, the residence of the living parent determines school zone assign-

ment. Whenever there is a question concerning custody of a minor child that cannot be

determined by the attendance zone school, refer the family to the Student Support Services

offices (254-4207) for assistance. (Photocopies will be made of documentation and

placed in the child’s permanent school record).

2. Foster parent or group home staff

Documents needed to enroll in school:

  1. Verification of residences

In order to verify a residence of any student new to a school, the enrolling school should ask

for written proof of residence. The following are acceptable:

> A homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy citing the proper address

> A rental agreement signed by the tenant and the landlord

> A closing statement for a real estate transaction

> A purchase agreement for a home signed by the seller and the purchased to be executed

in a reasonable amount of time

  1. Unofficial transcript showing all grades and credits
  2. Withdrawal Form (during school year)
  3. Standardized Test Scores

5. If student has a disability requiring special education, a copy of the previous year’s IEP and a

copy of the most recent evaluation is needed.

6. Copy of Immunization Record

7. Copy of Birth Certificate (original preferred)

  1. Social Security Card (Optional)
  2. A copy of the custodial agreement if the child is staying with a custodial adult other than his/her

birth parent if under a hardship as defined in G.S. 115C-366 OR a letter from DSS specifying foster parent placement.

If you do not have the documents required for enrollment and we cannot procure these documents

within a reasonable time on that day, you may go home and we will contact you as soon as we re-

ceive the documents.
