Subject: Proposal for a Reference Guide for Farmville, Virginia.

Problem:

People that visit Farmville are often leave thinking that there is nothing to do here except shop at Green front. This guide aims to help visitors and residents find new and interesting places in Farmville and possibly remind them that there are fun things to do out here in the middle of no where.

  1. Many college students, especially freshmen, do not leave campus and explore Farmville even though downtown Farmville is a short walk from campus.
  2. New visitors do not know where to go in Farmville unless they have been previously told by a current resident/student about fun places to visit.
  3. Green Front is the main selling point of Farmville but there are so many other noteworthy places to visit as well.
  4. Small stores are usually over-looked, this guide will help direct attention to them and possibly help broaden their client base.
  5. Current residents may grow bored or are unaware of new attractions/places in Farmville that have recently come into existence.
  6. Places like LVCA… or just LVCA are overlooked and deserve more attention, even if a person doesn’t think that they are interested in art there are definitely things worth looking at in that building.

Purpose:

To help visitors/residents easily find new and interesting places in Farmville. The guide will include descriptions of different shops, restaurants, bakeries, and scenic locations throughout Farmville.

Topics to Investigate:

  1. Uptown Coffee Café and all of the fun events and things that they offer to a growing college town.
  2. Small shops such as Penelope, Caryn’s, and The Sleeping Bee, could be overlooked
  3. Interesting/ town favorite restaurants such as Fish’n Pig or Patron are overlooked because of chain restaurants.
  4. People may feel uncomfortable walking around Longwood, they should know that is okay to look at the campus even if you are not on a tour.
  5. Unclear parking?
  6. Exciting things to in Farmville that require the outdoors/ physical activity

Audience:

The primary audience will be new residents and visitor of the Farmville Virginia area. It will serve as both an in-depth guide to places and things to do in town for people who are unfamiliar with the area. The secondary audience will be long time residents who are looking for new things to do and need a reference or reminder of what Farmville has to offer.

Methods:

I will gather informational brochures from shops and places of interest around Farmville and compile them into the guide so that there are first hand accounts/ comments about each place.

-Personal reviews: shop employees, customers, students, and residents

-Online reviews (yelp!)

-Pictures taken by me and/others (with citations and titles)

Qualifications:

I have heard from many students and visitors that there is nothing to do in Farmville. If you do not live in the area it is easy to believe that there is almost noting here for a college student, visitor, or resident. As far as I can tell there is no physical guide to Farmville that gives its audience the information they are seeking quickly and easily. As a resident/student at Longwood I have enough knowledge of the town to comprise a guide to help these people. I have gone into almost every shop and restaurant in town. This guide would be extremely useful, especially to newcomers who have yet to explore Farmville. The guide will help give it’s audience an idea of where to start their journey into discovering Farmville’s many fine qualities.
