Independent Study: Works Cited Page

Whenever you do any research, you will always be required to credit (cite) your sources, meaning you need to have a Bibliography or Works Cited page. For this project you are required to have at least 5 different sources and you need to provide a bibliographic citation for every source that you used in your project. (Remember, you should already have these sources from your Document Analysis, Sub-Topics and Quotes, and Two Minute Talk #2 so there’s no need to find any more). Failure to provide a Works Cited Page is considered plagiarism and is a serious academic offence.

Step 1: Create a citation for each source

Here’s a refresher on how to create a bibliographic citation:

o  Have your sources in front of you – it’s so much easier that way. Or at least the source information (the stuff I asked for at the top of your document analysis)

o  Go to http://easybib.com

o  Choose the type of source your quote is coming from (i.e., Journal Article – EBSCO, Book, Chapter in a book etc.)

o  Type in the URL (website) or ISBN (the number on the back of a book) and click “Autocite!” and double check to make sure it’s not missing information.

o  If Autocite doesn’t work, type the publication information into the blanks on Easybib.

o  Click “Create Citation”

o  Click the “Copy & Paste” button to bring up a window with your citations in it. Copy your citation exactly including punctuation onto your assignment.

Step 2: Organize and format your Works Cited Page

·  Open a Word (or equivalent) document.

·  Centered at the top of your page, type Works Cited. You do not need to make the title bigger but you can use bold to make it stand out. Do not italicize, underline, or use quotation marks.

·  On the line directly below the title, paste each of your citations one after the other. Do not skip lines between each citation.

·  Arrange your citations in alphabetical order according to the first word in each citation.

·  Highlight everything currently on your page. Choose Times New Roman, Arial or Tahoma font, size 12.

·  With everything still highlighted, click Format, Paragraph…, then change the Line Spacing to double, and under “Indentation”, where it says “Special” choose Hanging. Click OK.

·  See the back side of this page for an example of how your finished works cited page should look. If any changes need to be made to your formatting to make it look like the sample page, please make them.

Please note the formatting and the alphabetical order (believe it or not, these are important!)
