Job Title: Senior Data Centre Technician – Storage Specialist

School/Department: Information Services

Salary: £22,029 to £26,274 per annum, depending on skills and experience (Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.)

Contract Status: Full Time

Hours of Work: 36.25 h/w Mon – Fri on a 2 week shift pattern

First week - Mon – Thu 08:00 – 16:15 Fri 08:00 – 13:45

Second Week - Mon – Thu 12:15 – 20:00 Fri 10:15 – 18:00

(shift pattern hours currently under review)

Location: King’s Meadow Campus, but working on other campus’ as required

Reporting to: Data Centres Operations Team Leader

Purpose of the New Role: Staff replacement

Main Responsibilities / % time per year
1. / Provide technical expertise, knowledge and skills to setup, configure and implement the delivery of services offered by the Data Centres Operations Team to the University. In particular, services related to data storage support/provisioning (including backup/restore). / 50%
2. / Working within the procedures laid down, assist in the installation, configuration and maintenance (both preventative and remedial) of the Universities central IT systems installed in the data centres to support the work of the University, its staff and students. This includes server provisioning, hosting and maintenance, DBA Support, VM support (builds, configuration and maintenance), Licencing of Software, setting up and maintaining various system management and monitoring systems / 25%
3. / Working within the procedures laid down, assist with monitoring of the Universities central IT systems, provide 1st line support and Business Continuity services to ensure minimum disruption to the working of the University, its staff and students. / 20%
4. / Any other duties appropriate to the role and level. This will include out of hours on-call support. / 5%

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications/ Education / Considerable experience in operational management of an enterprise level storage environment / Enterprise level vendor accreditations in data storage platforms and environments
Skills/Training / Trained in the installation, configuration, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of enterprise level storage devices
Trained in the installation, configuration, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of enterprise level SAN infrastructure
Trained in the installation, configuration, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of Intel based server hardware and operating systems
Good written and verbal communication skills/ telephone manner
Ability to work methodically and follow procedures
Ability to keep and maintain accurate records
Ability to work under pressure
Self motivated
Ability to acquire new technical IT skills in a rapidly changing discipline
Ability to work under own initiative and as a member of a team
Committed positive approach to customer care
Good personal presentation
Willingness to work flexibly
Ability to travel from site to site / Accredited in the installation, configuration, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of enterprise level storage devices
Accredited in the installation, configuration, maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair of enterprise level SAN infrastructure
Trained in the installation and configuration of monitoring, alerting and event management systems specifically relating to data storage platforms and environments
Trained and accredited in VM installation, administration and maintenance
Trained and accredited in Microsoft SQL installation, administration and maintenance
Ability to drive a van and hold a full UK Driving Licence
Experience / Recognised and proven technical expertise in the configuration, management and maintenance of storage devices (DAS, NAS, SAN)
Recognised and proven technical expertise in the configuration, management and maintenance of SAN infrastructure (FC and iSCSI)
Recognised and proven technical expertise in day to day backup/restore management and maintenance
Recognised and proven technical expertise in a variety of data centre infrastructure and management related tasks (e.g. H&S, Security, equipment disposal, environmental and systems monitoring etc.)
Recognised and proven technical expertise in using a variety of systems management and monitoring systems
Experienced in :
Working within a structured ITIL service delivery framework
Providing face to face, email and telephone IT support to customers and end users
Proven technical problem solving capability often requiring remote diagnosis (e.g. using remote access tools or via the phone/email) / Experienced in :
Hardware specification of enterprise level data storage platforms
Configuration, management and maintenance of storage devices from some/all of the following manufacturers – Dell, Dot Hill, HP, Nexsan
Configuration, management and maintenance of Cisco SAN infrastructure (FC and iSCSI)
Backup/restore management and maintenance using HP Data Protector
Working within a Data Centre environment
Working with some/all of -
SNMP
WMI
SIM
IPMI
Nagios
Solarwinds
Cacti
Dell OpenManage
Working with Microsoft Active Directory
Recognised and proven technical expertise in managing a variety of Windows server operating systems
Statutory/Legal / Good understanding of need to work within and comply with current H&S Regulations and procedures to maintain a safe environment for Staff, Students and visitors / Understanding of Data Protection and IT Security principles

Additional Information

1)  The successful candidate will be expected to provide Out of Hours (First Line) Support to cover Data Centre environmental problems. This 24/7 cover is scheduled on a rota basis – currently the rota has 6 staff on it so each person covers 1 week in 6, but we expect the frequency to change when this post is filled.
2)  The successful candidate will be expected to provide Out of Hours (Second Line) Support to cover Storage/Backup/Restore issues. This 24/7 cover is scheduled on a rota basis – currently the rota has 4 staff on it so each person covers 1 week in 4, but we expect the frequency to change when this post is filled. We are looking to change the level of cover from Second to First Line Support in time.
