1,000 hours of education are required including 200 hours of anatomy, physiology, and neurology, provided that this includes a minimum of 50 hours of neurology; 150 hours of mycology and/or kinesiology; 100 hours of general pathology, including instruction related to skin, neuromuscular, and soft tissue conditions; 75 hours of hygiene, first aid, and other areas related to the practice of massage therapy; 150 hours of general theory and technique, provided that a minimum of 50 hours of instruction is given in each type of massage therapy; and 325 hours of additional instruction and student practice in massage techniques. At this time, none of the programs offered at UCMT will qualify graduates for New York licensure by themselves: additional education will be required. The New York State Massage Therapy Examination costs $250 and the application fee costs $108. The re-registration fee is $58 every three years. In addition, as of Jan.1, 2012, there will be the additional requirement of CEU’s when Re-Registering. A limited permit may also be issued by the State Education Department to a qualified applicant who meets all the licensure requirements except the examination and citizenship requirements. The limited permit costs $35. A limited permit is valid for no more than one year from the date of issuance or until the results of the next licensing examination for which the applicant is eligible are officially available; whichever comes first. The limited permit is non-renewable. (Applicants, who have not completed a program in massage therapy registered by the New York State Education Department as licensure qualifying, or the equivalent, must have completed program of massage therapy accepted by the State Board for Massage Therapy. Applicants must also hold National Certification or an examination equivalent to the New York State Examination, as determined by the State Board for Massage Therapy and the Department. Applicants must also have 5 years of working massage experience.)
