Burke: Food sales are on the rise in elementary and high schools, staff are dining in cafeterias as well. March 2015, Burke county had a SRV consultant attend classrooms, and by the end of year three, 100% will be trained. GEAR UP starting in schools. East Burke recently visited ASU campus, returned to school, with excitement about attending college. Report cards scores are on the rise.
Watauga: GEAR UP is a great program for Watauga. STEM is focused and funded. New professional development tradition offered at the beginning of the school year. Instead of guest speakers from outside the county, they turned inward to their own faculty and staff to lead the day. Everyone was included throughout the school systems, even cafeteria staff.
Caldwell: Smooth beginning to a new school year. Currently, preparing for professional development. Enjoyment and benefits of ASU interns was expressed.
Avery County: Three cohorts up and going, producing highly concentrated courses, resulting in upcoming graduates of the program. Felt to be very successful. Reading scores are on the rise. 6th grade Math and 8th grade Science scores increased, increasing them over the state. K-2 teachers creating their own BOY assessments after studying the previous year need and growth. Ashe, Alleghany, Avery and Watauga set to begin school next year on August 22 with the remaining NC schools beginning August 29th. Unless this is revisited it will remain as is. FASFA went up 50% last year. They reported a recipient of the Golden Leaf Scholarship last year. Parents are very thankful for the ASIS program as it replaced Teaching Fellows.
ASU: Teacher Education Open House on September 26, Holmes Convocation Center on September 26 from 9:00 am – 12:00 am. James Center welcomes everyone to visit their webpage to schedule tours of the college and learn more about what is offered. Yield rate was 37% last year with Teacher Ed at 55%. They will be out recruiting September 19th through October 19th. A NC Chapter of National and State Teacher of the Year is in the process of coming together to support teachers, working on education policies, teacher leadership and recruitment.
