UPDATE COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
September 9, 2013
Call to Order: V. P., Marty Ensberg called the meeting to order at 6:30p.m.
Members Present: Marty Ensberg, Dave Ergens, Julie Jacks. Delena Wellmer, Jan Malone, Pastor Ken Johnson
Members Absent: Liz Ball, Erica Long, Paul Kasper
Visitors: Phyllis Nollan
Devotions: Jan Malone
Agenda: approved as presented
Minutes: all were approved as presented
Financial Report: Marty stated that our finances look good. There was a discussion about adding a new budget line item related to “families in need”. Marty will discuss this with Judy Getzin before further action is taken.
Pastor’s Report:
· The council retreat may be on Oct. 12th or Nov. 9th.
· Recommended to change Ethan Smith’s title to Director of Music. Council approved.
· The office manager position is still open but Pastor has plenty of volunteers to assist in the office. He also is upgrading the technology so that the new person when hired would be able to function more efficiently. Mr. Freed is volunteering to update the system and is also fulfilling the necessary help the Pastor needs. The council approved of paying the assistant.
· Sunday School begins with the Installation of the teachers on September 15th.
· Suggested that Shane Cherry’s title be changed to Media Tech. Council approved.
· The worship leader position will continue on a month to month basis until the right fit is found.
· Youth night has been changed to Sunday and Darren has a conflict and unable to work with Cara. Pastor is interviewing candidates to help Cara at this time.
· Pastor requested that if any organization, team or other activity wants to announce their events, please make your own fliers. Volunteers will insert them in the Sunday bulletin.
· New member Sunday is October 20th.
Principal’s Report:
· Pre-School grand opening was well attended and given a blessing by the Pastor.
· School return was successful. Phyllis gave thanks for the helpers of the parent brunch. There is a positive feeling among parents, teachers, and students.
· Summer projects are almost done. The pre-school construction, Rygh Hall renovation, tree removal, office furniture update were successfully completed.
· Both Pre-school and RHLS are full.
· A special thanks to “Turning West Consulting” for redirecting the pre-school program.
· Apple Sunday which included installation of school teachers and Bible presentation to incoming sixth graders went well. Next year we will also include the new incoming 7th and 8th graders to RHLS.
· WASC accreditation process is moving forward. The final visit is in March.
· Phyllis is investigating security measures for the school. More information will be forthcoming.
· Phyllis requested that we review the landscaping contract .
· A safe will be installed over the fireplace behind a whiteboard in Rygh Hall.
· Playground equipment should be here by Monday, September 16th .
Old Business:
· The parsonage has been rented for a year.
· The audit committee is beginning to prepare items for an audit.
· There was a going away party for Lauren Kozaki, our office manager. She was wished a wonderful future in her new married life.
New Business:
· It has been requested that Sherri Miller will give a final analysis of the summer Splash Program.
· The council approved the addition of a plaque for the upstairs restroom honoring the memory of Gladys Black.
Ministry Team Reports:
· Fellowship:
o It was reported that the Installation of Pastor Ken went well.
o Preparations are being done for the Church Picnic on September 22. It will be at the Church after second service.
· Congregational Care:
o They have a full team and are ready for direction from the Pastor who will give them update information about members.
o BASICS next meeting is on September 25th at Pastor’s home.
· Missions:
o Men’s Retreat is September 27th -29th
o The Women’s Retreat is Oct 4-6th at Luther Glen.
o There will be a guest speaker from San Salvador on Oct. 20th.
o There will be a fundraiser for Annette Ramirez on Nov. 2nd.
o Habitat For Humanity is scheduled for October 19th.
· Music and Worship:
o The team is preparing for Sunday school Installation (Sept. 15th) and Woof Sunday ,Sept. 29th- One service at 10:00. It will be held outdoors.
o The team is also preparing a handbook covering the activities and responsibilities for all church events. It also is evaluating the cost of replacing the worn paraments.
o All Saints Sunday is Nov. 3rd. Sabrina will be collecting the names of those Saints that we know who have passed.
· Outreach:
o This team is working with Pastor Ken on events related to the new members.
· Parish Ed.: They are meeting Sunday morning.
· Property:
o The installation of the new floor in Rygh Hall is completed.
o Installation of the fountain in the handicap bathroom is on going.
o The organ pit fix is being evaluated. There is a safety concern.
· School Board: See Principal’s report.
· Stewardship: Marty will contact Ken Getzin for an update.
· Next Meeting and Devotions – Music and Worship
