/ Guardian Application

Dear: Guardian Applicant

Thank you for your interest in Villages Honor Flight and in being a guardian for a future mission. Enclosed please find a copy of the guardian application. The first two pages are background, requirements and application process. The second two are the actual application. Please fill it out and return it to the address on the bottom of page two.

There are several requirements of which you should be aware:

  • Being a guardian can be physically demanding. Activities on flight day start at 3AM and you will not be back in bed for close to 24 hours. You will be on the go for most of that 24 hours. Travelling is tiring and you may be required to push a wheel chair for several hours at a time. Some of the surfaces are not that smooth and could be wet.
  • The minimum age to be a guardian is 18 as of flight day.
  • The upper age limit for guardians is 75 as of flight day. However, any applicant who is over 70as of flight day will be required to present documentation from their physician indicating that they are “fit to fly”. If you are over 70, please contact our Medical Director for specific instructions. All guardians, regardless of age, must pass a medical review by the Medical Director at the first preflight meeting before they are (fully) accepted.
  • There are other important positions within Villages Honor Flight that are not age restricted. Some may enable you to fly as “special staff” on a future Honor Flight. Please contact us if you are over 75 or are not sufficiently fitto be a guardian and are interested in those other positions.
  • Guardians pay their own way for the actual flight. The current donation is $400 for the privilege of being a guardian. This includes all transportation (air and ground), food, and incidentals. The donation is tax deductable (if you itemize deductions).
  • Guardians are expected to attend two preflight meetings, one 6 weeks before the flight and one 2 weeks before the flight. These meetings are an integral part of the overall mission. They are normally held on Sundays. A complete list of flight dates and preflight dates/times for 2015 is available. All are held in the vicinity of Lady Lake, FL. We try to contact guardians about a specific mission at least 10 weeks before the flight date so that any calendar adjustments can be made.
