From the Pastor’s Study
THE ART OF WAITING

What do checkout lines, rides at amusement parks, the cable repair guy, and the DMV all have in common? They all make us wait. They make us set our life on hold while we mark the passing of time by looking at our watches, our cell phones, or our twiddling thumbs.

No one likes to wait yet God’s Word calls for us to be patient. For Isaiah, patience is expressed in waiting for Lord with the reward being renewed strength (Isaiah 40:31). Paul reminded the Galatians that patience is one of the fruits of the Spirit. It is produced when we have confidence in the timing of God (Galatians 5:22). Jesus spoke about prudence in planning when, in Luke 14 He asked, “For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first of all sit down and calculate the cost to see if has enough to complete it?” The question speaks of making sure all things are ready before making a major decision.

What can we learn about our own Pastor Search process from these passages? First, we must be patient. The process of collecting and working through resumes can be tedious but it must not be rushed or pursued without much prayer. Second, we must check the qualifications of each candidate making sure their education, experience, and philosophy of ministry are a good match for the church. And finally, we must not rush the work of the Holy Spirit as He speaks to the hearts of the Pastor Search Committee members, revealing in His good time the right person to lead Utica Baptist Church.

Pray for our search committee. Pray for their wisdom and insight. While you pray for the Committee pray and ask God what you need to do to get ready for a new pastor. God may need to work in individual lives in the church before the church is ready for the next shepherd. Good things really do come to those who wait.

He must increase, I must decrease
