Building Vocabulary Skills with the Kumon Reading Program

Vocabulary allows us to communicate verbally and express ourselves. A child’s vocabulary range consists of the words he or she can understand when reading, writing, listening and speaking. As your child’s vocabulary increases, so does his or her comprehension and independence. Children need to be encouraged from the beginning to develop self-learning ability and the proper study approach to learning new words. Kumon Instructors play an integral role in fostering the development of self-learning ability in their students.

As early as Level 2A, students who have difficulty in the Sound Part Puzzle learning focus are encouraged to look at the front side of their worksheet for help when completing an assignment. In the Sentence Building Skill Block, from Levels AI to CII, it is important for students to know that in the first series (e.g., AI), the vocabulary is on the sixth page, and it is on both the sixth and seventh pages in the second series (e.g., AII).

Students benefit from being exposed to books from the beginning of their Kumon study, and are encouraged to read from the RRL as early as possible. As students cultivate the habit of reading books, they develop a wider range of vocabulary skills by learning about different subjects and cultures. By reading more, they acquire the ability to determine the meaning of an unknown word through context, and greater general knowledge through exposure to a variety of texts.

In Kumon, students with a rich vocabulary are able to continue reading passages without asking questions, even when they are studying worksheets containing words and phrases that would generally be perceived as difficult for children of their age. Using a variety of strategies, Kumon Instructors guide and equip all students with the skills to improve their vocabulary.
