  1. Position Overview

The Lecturer - Conservation and Land Managementis responsible for the delivery of quality Vocational Education and Training (VET) within the context of Batchelor Institute's role as Australia's leading First Nations Tertiary Education and Research provider.

VET Lecturer positions within Batchelor Institute are aligned to the IBSA VET Practitioner Capability Framework adapted to the Batchelor Institute context[1].

The Lecturer - Conservation and Land Management is responsible for the development and delivery of innovative VET programs underpinned by the Batchelor Institute Both-ways principles of practice as well as contributing to delivery of approved training programswithin the areas of Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management training package.

In addition, the Lecturer -Conservation and Land Managementwill assist the Senior Lecturer - Conservation and Land Management with particular duties:

  • Teaching, management and facilitation of culturally appropriate training and learning activities;
  • Student assessments, maintenance of student records, supervision of students, and monitoring student progression;
  • Liaison with students and industry partners;
  • Participate in activities and all requirements of the Department of Commerce and Industry, VET Services.
  • Development of appropriate teaching resources and assessment materials.

1.1Teaching

  • Investigate arange of learning theories to expand and improve teaching repertoirefor a rangeoflearners.
  • Design learning programs based on the Batchelor Institute Learning and Teaching Framework which meet industry expectations and provide meaningful learning experiences.
  • Develop and implements models for learner connectedness; demonstrate a range offacilitation strategies to respond to diverse learner needs; seek guidance from appropriate Aboriginal advisors and shares practices in the use of alternative delivery methods contextualised to Aboriginal learners.
  • Evaluateprogram outcomes using established tools and techniques; modify program designinresponse to evaluation outcomes.
  • Assessment
  • Use contemporary assessment research and theory to inform and expand practice.
  • Design, develop and evaluate assessment tools for purposes including RPL and assessment of training outcomes; use a variety of technologies to develop and implement the tools.
  • Adapt assessment approaches as required for different contexts and candidates; review assessment processes and identify improvements; provide assessment feedback to support continued learning.
  • Actively contribute to assessment validation processes; use validation outcomes to improve practice.
  • Industry and Community Engagement
  • Build relationships with enterprises, communities and stakeholders to ensure learning programs, and related assessment, to meet learners’ needs.
  • Engage in industry and community networks to support sharing of vocational, and learning and assessment, knowledge and skills.
  • Implement approaches to build vocational competence, leading to credibility with industry and community.
  • Design training and other solutions to meet identified workforce development needs.
  • Systems and Compliance
  • Develop approaches to meet compliance requirements of the Standards for RTO’s 2015 and other relevant legislation and continually improves practice.
  • Monitor activities of VET system stakeholders and use this knowledge in program design.
  • Contextualise training packages and accredited courses to source and select best products to meet learner needs.
  • Support policy development and generate ideas for improvements; support colleagues’ use of Batchelor Institute electronic management systems.

  1. Essential selection criteria

Applicants must demonstrate they are able to undertake the responsibilities of the position as contained in the position description and are able to meet the following Key Selection Criteria:

2.1Qualifications and Licensing

The successful candidate must possess a relevant vocational qualification at the diploma or degree level, combined with a minimum of 5 years Industry/professional/vocational experience. Relevant postgraduate qualifications will also be an asset,

The successful applicant will hold

  • The minimum vocational teaching qualification Certificate IV in Training and Assessment TAE40110 (or equivalent) and/or Diploma or higher level qualification in adult education
  • The Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card).
  • Relevant current skills and licenses’ relevant to the Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management industry areas.
  • Qualifications in English as a Second Language or Adult Education
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of equipment and machinery regularly utilised in the industry. For example, chainsaws, chemical application equipment, fire-fighting equipment, power tools, machinery, GPS and cybertracker units.

Demonstrated knowledge and successful experience of Vocational Education and Training, including student progression that will enable vocational training and education programs in the relevant teaching areas to be researched, prepared, delivered, assessed, evaluated and administered in a variety of contexts, including remote contexts, and workplace delivery, with reference to the above Domains of Work requirements.

2.3Work Skills

Demonstrated understanding of and significant personal and interpersonal skills for working effectively as a team member to achieve outcomes within an Aboriginal Vocational and Training context as per the above Work Skill requirements.

2.4Working with Aboriginal people

Well-developed knowledge of the social, political and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as relevant to Vocational Education and Training, and demonstrated capacity to work effectively and communicate appropriately with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, communities, organisations and staff members.

2.5VET Management and Administration

Demonstrated understanding of and previous successful experience in complying with VET management and administration policies, procedures and business rules

2.6NT Context

Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory by land, sea or air (eg. in a light aircraft), possess a Northern Territory ‘C’ class driver’s licence with experience driving on unformed roads, and be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation and in various environmental settings available to the Batchelor Institute staff.
