There are 3 categories of IRREGULAR PRETERITE VERBS. Please read the explanation before each chart to help you understand how the verbs are formed and how their meaning may change in the preterite!

1. They have the same endings.

2. THERE ARE NO ACCENTS.

CATEGORY 3: PRETERITE WITH ROOTS THAT ARE IRREGULAR Note the Rules: 1. These verbs all have the same endings. 2. THERE ARE NO ACCENTS! 3. If the 3RD person plural ends in j you must use –eron not (–ieron). 4. * hacer- the root of 3rd person singular is hiz > hizo. 5. Verbs used in the preterite can change meaning from the present tense-Please note the changes in meaning in ENGLISH! 6. *”haber” is used with the past perfect tense.
