Belvedere Park Primary School

STUDENT UNIFORM POLICY

Introduction

·  School Councils have the authority to create and implement a Student Uniform Policy for their students. This Student Uniform Policy sets out Belvedere Park Primary School Council’s expectations with regard to student appearance and applies during school hours, while travelling to and from school and when students are on school excursions.

Rationale

·  The Student Uniform Policy reinforces in students a pride in their own appearance, instils recognition of themselves as an integral part of the school community and assists in developing pride in representing their school. Issues of equality, health and safety, and expense are also factors that contribute to the establishment of the Student Uniform Policy.

Aims

·  To create a sense of collective and individual pride in students and their identification with the school.

·  To remove the sense of competition in clothing and promote equality amongst all students.

·  To improve the safety of Belvedere Park students by making them instantly recognisable

in any group when on school excursions.

·  To provide durable clothing that is cost effective and practical for our school environment.

·  To maintain and enhance the positive image of the school in the community.

Enforcement of the Student Uniform Policy

The following procedure will be implemented when Belvedere Park Primary School’s Student Uniform Policy is not followed and no written explanation is received.

1.  The class teacher will send a standard letter to the parent reminding them of their responsibility in ensuring the adherence to the school’s dress code.

If there appears to be an ongoing problem –

2.  The Principal or Assistant Principal will phone the parent and discuss the matter.

3. If this fails to solve the matter, the Principal or Assistant Principal will

arrange a meeting with the parent to discuss the matter.

In keeping with the school’s Health Policy, the Student Uniform Policy reinforces the important consideration of ‘Sun Smart’ procedures. Therefore all students are required to wear the school sun hat in Terms 1 and 4 whilst in the playground. Children who do not have a school hat will be restricted to areas of shade during recess breaks (i.e. under sails area). In Terms 2 and 3 if wearing a hat, it must be the school hat.

For the safety of students and to provide a sense of unity in public, Belvedere Park students will not be allowed to attend out of school activities (i.e. excursions/trips) unless they meet the requirements of the Student Uniform Policy.

Exemptions from the Student Uniform Policy

Parents seeking exemptions to the Student Uniform Policy due to religious beliefs, ethnic or cultural background, student disability, health condition or economic hardship must apply in writing to the School Council.

The school may also declare ‘casual dress’ days where students are allowed to wear clothing other than that stipulated in the Student Uniform Policy.

Where exemption to the Student Uniform Policy is required, parents should make contact with the classroom teacher. If it is a temporary matter parents are asked to please forward a letter to the student’s teacher explaining the situation.

Evaluation of the Student Uniform Policy

Evaluation of the Student Uniform Policy will be addressed by the School Council as part of the review cycle. The School Council may review certain items of clothing without consultation.
