KEMPTON NEW CHURCH NEWSLETTER - July 2016 page 4

“HAPPY IS THE NATION WHOSE GOD IS THE LORD.”

Happy is the nation whose God is Jehovah,

The people He has chosen for His own inheritance.

Jehovah looks from the heavens;

He sees all the sons of man.

From the established place where He dwells,

He views all who dwell upon the earth.

He forms their heart together;

He discerns all their deeds.

There is no king saved by the multitude of an army;

A mighty man is not rescued by much power.

A horse is a lying thing for safety;

Neither will he escape by the multitude of his valor.

Behold, the eye of Jehovah is upon them that fear Him,

Upon them that hope in His mercy,

To rescue their soul from death,

And to keep them alive in famine.

Our soul tarries for Jehovah;

Our help and our shield is He.

For our heart we shall be glad in Him,

Because we have trusted in the name of His holiness.

Let Thy mercy, O Jehovah, be upon us,

According as we hope in Thee. Psalm 33:12-22

FROM THE PASTOR

A nation whose God is the Lord: As we celebrate our nation’s birthday, we can reflect on the beautiful words of Psalm 33. It says that the Lord sees all the sons of man—not just the people of one favored nation—and forms our hearts together. It shows that the strength of a nation does not come from the multitude of its armed forces or defense budget. The Lord is our help and shield. We will be a happy nation according as we hope in Him.

Here are three quotations from the letters of the founding fathers of our country on this theme:

“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable support… The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and cherish them… Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion.” – George Washington’s Farewell

Address, September 19, 1796

“Our Constitution was made for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other… Without religion this world would be something not fit to be mentioned in polite company: I mean hell.” – John Adams

Address to the militia of Massachusetts, 1798;

Letter to Jefferson, April 19, 1817

“I have lived a long, long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can arise without His aid?”

– Benjamin Franklin, Address to the

Constitutional Convention, July 28, 1787
