EROSION

PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT

Due Date: Thursday, February 23, 2017

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of weathering and erosion in the Los Angeles area.

Procedure: You will take pictures around the Los Angeles area which illustrate different types of mechanical weathering, chemical weathering and/or erosion. The pictures must have you in them and they must be from within the current time period. You and your family should plan at least two outings in search of weathering and erosion. You may want to form groups and hunt together, but pictures and projects are individual.

To receive credit EACH picture must:

·  Clearly show the natural effects of weathering or erosion on rocks (No constructions sites, asphalt roads, cement sidewalks…) found in a remote location in Los Angeles.

·  Label the photo with date, exact location, and the specific type of weathering/erosion. Then a clear, accurate and detailed description, which may include the definition of that type of weathering or erosion.

Example Label:

·  The description should clearly explain how the photograph demonstrates the type of weathering/erosion chosen for the photograph.

Types include: I.) Mechanical Weathering: a. Abrasion, b. Exfoliation, c. Plant Growth, d. Animal Actions II.) Chemical Weathering: a. by Water, b. by Acids (precipitation, groundwater, living things), c. by Air (includes oxidation and rust).

III.) Erosion: a. Wave Erosion, b. Wind Erosion c. Erosion by Mass Movement ( 1. rock falls, 2. Landslides, 3. Mudflows) IV.) River Erosion (including stream channel formation and the Grand Canyon).

·  Must include at least eight types (see choices listed above). If you are not sure of the type, you can bring in the picture ahead of time and we can investigate together. Some may include more than one type of weathering or erosion.

·  You must be seen in at least four of the photographs in order to receive full credit. You may use one photograph from a previous date (like a trip you went on to the Grand Canyon). The other four types of weathering or erosion can be found on the internet. We will use the I-pad cart. All photos should be digital so that you can import them to Google.

·  Presentation:

Photos should be inserted into a Google Slides presentation. The labels are next to each photo on the same slide. There will be an introductory slide with your name. Then 8 slides following with the photos you have selected. The last slide may include your above and beyond section.
