SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The BartleyWoods School located in Fannin County, Texas, will receive an Official Texas Historical Marker at a special dedication ceremony on April 26, 1997; and
WHEREAS, The dedication of the marker will take place in the Fannin County National Guard Armory in Bonham, Texas, during the 1997 BartleyWoods allschool reunion to celebrate this historic occasion; it will be followed by the unveiling of the marker at the school site; and
WHEREAS, In the early 1890s when the public school system was being established, Fannin County rural schools were given names; before 1892, all rural schools in the county were designated by number; research revealed that three schools formed the nucleus for the BartleyWoods School; and
WHEREAS, The Fannin County Board of School Trustees consolidated Bartley School, Woods School, and Providence School in 1932, and in 1940 Hail School was added to complete the consolidation; a new modern school building costing $40,000 was built on the school site in 1940; part of the handsome brick veneer building designed by architect Hoke Smith, who was assisted by the Works Progress Administration, remains today; and
WHEREAS, The new edifice housed seven classrooms, an auditorium, a library, the superintendent's office, and a cafeteria; a fully accredited school with 12 grades, BartleyWoods School was officially dedicated on April 24, 1941; seven teachers instructed about 200 pupils; the pride of the community for their school through the years has enhanced the achievement of educational excellence maintained by the faculty year after year; and
WHEREAS, Rural education began to change across the nation and, when the expanded consolidation of most small school districts occurred in the late 1950s, the BartleyWoods School was closed officially; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby extend congratulations to all those who gather to reminisce and renew old friendships when BartleyWoods School was an important part of their lives; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared as a memento of this notable occasion.
