Graduate Assistant Application Packet 2018-2019

The Graduate Assistant role at California Baptist University is designed to supplement one’s graduate study, preferably in the applicant’s particular field of study. In order to fulfill the role of a Graduate Assistant, one must be accepted into an approved graduate program of study in order to be considered. An approved graduate program is a post bachelor’s degree program that results in a Masters or Doctoral degree (rather than a certificate) from a regionally accredited institution, or the evaluated equivalency. Once selected, each Graduate Assistantwill be required to be enrolled full-time each semester throughout the entire term of their appointment. Full-time enrollment varies based on the institution and program of study. Each Graduate Assistant will be required to submit proof of full-time enrollment during each term of appointment.

Anticipated Graduate Assistant Positions:

CBU offers a variety of Graduate Assistant positions. Applicants are encouraged to apply for more than one position. Below are short descriptions of each anticipated position. Full job descriptions are available in the Office of Leadership & Transitions.

ASCBU (Student Government): This GA will assist in the training and advising of the ASCBU Executive Council and Student Senate (Student Government).

Athletics—Athletic Training Rec Sports: This GA willfurther develop their knowledge, clinical skills, abilities, and patient-centered care by gaining hands-on experience working with CBU Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Sports Programs under the guidance of full-time staff members.(Must be NATA certified.)

Career Center: This GA will assist in Career Center programming created to professionally develop and equip students for their future careers. Duties include conducting career counseling appointments, résumé reviews, and assisting in the planning and execution of events and fairs.

Community Life—Recreational Programs: This GA will assist in program development of various recreational sports and outdoor adventure programs both on- and off-campus.This GA will also assist in the selection, training, and supervision of the Community Life undergraduate student leaders as well as multiple student referees.

International Center: This GA will assist international students in their integration to CBU and American culture. This person will be involved in event programming, student leadership training, international student orientation, registration and administrative support for the International Center.

Leadership & Transitions: This GA will assist in the development and management of the Student Leadership program, including training, selection, and development for traditional undergraduate student leaders.

New Student Programs: This GA will assist in the selection, training, and supervision of the FOCUS Interns and Leaders. This GA will also assist in the planning and implementation of Welcome Weekend and the FOCUS Class.

Spiritual Life—Compassion Ministries:This GA assists in creating opportunities for students to grow in their relationship with Christ by tangibly serving others during weekly projects and weekend excursions.

Spiritual Life—Mobilization: This GA assists in creating opportunities for students to grow in their relationship with Christ through training, development, and participation in International Service Projects.

Spiritual Life—University Ministries: This GA assists with the recruitment and development of student interns, to help coordinate men’s and student-athlete’s ministries, to help coordinate care of Third Culture Kids, and to help design and implement inroads for Spiritual Life to reach non-traditional populations.

Spiritual Life—Women’s Ministry:This GA assists in creating opportunities for female students to grow in their relationship with Christ through discipleship events and small groups.

Recreation Center –Facilities: This GA position focuses on facility management including safety, risk management, policy development/enforcement and day to day operations; in addition, they are responsible for assisting in developing, implementing and evaluating/assessing the development and training of student workers.

Recreation Center – Fitness: This GA position focuses onfitness programs, including development and assessment, and staff selection and training; in addition, they are responsible for assisting in developing, implementing and evaluating/assessing the development and training of student workers.

Residence Life:This GA position is a live-in position designed to assist the Residence Director with the day to day operation of an assigned living area. GA responsibilities include assisting with para-professional training and supervision, participating in the student discipline process, programming, mentoring, and maintaining positive student relationships. In addition, a Residence Life GA will work in one of the three following special focus areas:

  1. Collaborative Programming:The Collaborative Programming GA will provide assistance with all Residence Life large scale programs, which include: Halloween event, Woo Fest, etc. This position will research and develop multiple opportunities for interdepartmental programming.
  1. Residential Marketing:The Residential Marketing GA will assist in developing a professional and uniformed brand for Residence Life. They will assist living areas in creative and attractive advertisements and marketing plans. This position will train and develop RAs and professional staff in new and creative marketing/advertisement strategies.
  1. Para-Professional Training:The Para-Professional Training GA will play a major role in assisting with fall and spring trainings, as well as the monthly social and developmental RA meetings. This position will also have the opportunity to participate in RA selection process throughout the academic year. Working closely with the Assistant Director of Residence Life, this GA will research and assist in frequent staff development opportunities.

Serving as a Graduate Assistant at CaliforniaBaptistUniversity is a privilege that carries high expectations. Developing leadership is one of the primary purposes of the University, and in few areas of college life do such genuine opportunities for leadership development exist than in the area of Student Services. In addition to being a committed Christian, I agree to abide by the following expectations:

  3. To regularly attend a local church and California Baptist University Chapel services.
  4. To work under the supervision of my supervisor(s) and maintain a cooperative and supportive stance with all administrative personnel in the Student Services Division.
  5. To accept and abide by the specific job description and expectations as established by my supervisor(s).
  6. To maintain full-time enrollment (as defined by the respective college/university) in an approved graduate program throughout the entire term of appointment as a graduate assistant.
  7. To obtain supervisor(s) approval prior to exceeding full-time enrollment (as defined by the respective college/university) status as a graduate student.
  8. To coordinate all other time commitments with supervisor(s) and reach agreement concerning the acceptance of any such commitments, prior to accepting additional commitments.
  9. To participate in all educational and leadership development programs as required by my supervisor(s), and as are necessary for the effective performance of responsibilities.
  10. To remain informed of University-related information by maintaining and regularly reviewing messages sent via the CBULancerMail system.
  11. To completely abstain from the use of tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs and narcotics drugs (including medical marijuana), and/or gambling (regardless as to whether classes are in session).
  12. To support, abide by, and assist in maintaining California Baptist University policies stated in the University Catalog and Student Handbook.
  13. To actively engage in all GA Cohort activities, including training and GA meetings.
  14. To think critically through three personal and three professional goals for my GA position that will enhance my personal and professional development and share these goals with my supervisor(s).
  15. To regularly meet with other GAs to exchange ideas, share successes and challenges, and encourage one another.
  16. To approach my GA position as a learning experience full of opportunities and challenges for personal and professional growth.
  17. To keep lines of communication open between me, my supervisor(s), my cohort, and my students.
  18. To strive to maintain balance in my life in terms of keeping healthy lines between my personal and professional life by setting aside regular weekly time to do something that refills me.
  19. To find a mentor to walk with during my GA journey.
