TITLE: SENIOR GROUNDS WORKER DEPARTMENT: Physical Facilities
TRADE/SALARY RANGE: SG-9 $32,653 NUMBER OF POSITIONS: One (1)
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: A Senior Grounds Worker supervises a small staff of grounds workers and/or grounds care personnel and is responsible as a working supervisor for the upkeep of the grounds and roads and is responsible to perform a variety of tasks required to maintain the appearance and safe condition of grounds and associated facilities at Binghamton University. Typical activities may include scheduling and assigning work to a crew and may supervise the work of a large staff of temporary employees on short assignments and/or may serve as the immediate overall assistant to the Grounds Supervisor. In addition, the individual will maintain playing fields and other recreational areas and facilities. May occasionally operate light construction equipment such as front-end loaders and backhoes. May be required to keep records of labor and materials used. This individual will complete periodic spot checks to insure that instructions are being followed and equipment is properly used and will report orally to supervisor on progress of projects. This individual may need to develop computer skills to operate the Departments facilities management system (MAXIMO), KRONOS time management system, and purchasing system as implemented in their area and on their level.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Although competitive examinations are not held for this class, candidates must have at least two years of experience and/or training in grounds maintenance. Applicants must possess or obtain during the probationary period a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License with Air Brakes endorsement. Incumbent must possess or obtain, during the probationary period, a Pesticide Applicator’s Certification for Category 3A. Applicant will be subject to a pre-employment drug test. Two years supervisory experience preferred. Applicant should have a background in small engine repair to include work on lawn mowers, weed eaters, riding mowers, small gasoline engine and hydraulic repair. The applicant will be assigned to do repair work as needed. Applicants must meet the following job requirements:
* A working knowledge of methods and equipment used in grounds care and maintenance work.
* A working knowledge of methods of planting, cultivating and caring for trees, shrubs, flowers, lawns, and grounds.
* A working knowledge of proper use of fertilizers, sprays and dust used to control and eradicate pest and disease.
* A working knowledge of the facilities rules and regulations as they relate to grounds care and maintenance.
* A working knowledge of operating heavy equipment such as excavators, back hoes and similar machinery.
* Ability to prepare standard written reports.
* Ability to organize and schedule work.
* Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
* Applicant must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
* Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor.
* Ability to establish a supervisory relationship with a small crew of workers.
SPECIAL INFORMATION: The initial assignment for this position is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. shift. Position works Monday through Friday with Saturday and Sunday as pass days. The operational needs of the University require the ability to call in Grounds Workers in an emergency situation during other than normal work hours. This type of work will require Senior Grounds Workers to work long and varied hours during periods of emergency or inclement weather. The successful candidate will be subject to pre-employment and random/mandatory drug and alcohol testing pursuant to federal regulations. The successful candidate for this position will be deemed as a university essential employee.
