Job Purpose:

To be part of a team of academic, technical and administrative colleagues to facilitate learning in the Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences of the highest quality through; teaching, curriculum planning and development; Research, consultancy, enterprise and scholarly activities; and associated academic administration.

It is expected that academic appointments will be expected to engage in research and research-related activities, which will inform curriculum delivery and collaborative learning in partnership with the students.

Key Responsibilities:

The role holder will be a member of theArtsDepartmentand will contribute to delivering on the Faculty’s strategic priorities, which include the integration of excellent teaching, high-quality research, emerging business and regional engagement development activities within an academic context. The appointee may contribute torecruitment of students, planning and delivery of undergraduate modules within the new Art and Design History programme(scheduled to commence in 2018/19), as well as Historical and Critical Theory components within Design programmes. The role holder will be expected to maintain an active research profile within the Department’s Visual and Material Culture research group and may also be required to teach on other relevant programmes and undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Executive Dean of Faculty.

In particular, the appointee will be required to contribute to the Faculty as outlined below:

1.1Learning and Teaching:

  • To contribute to learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and where appropriate on short/professional courses, through:
  • the design, preparation and development of teaching materials in specialist and general design subject areas;
  • the delivery of modules through practical sessions, lectures, seminars, and tutorials;
  • setting, supervising, and assessing assignments and project work, and attending assessment boards.
  • Contribute to research and development of innovative methods of teaching, learning and assessment;
  • Liaise closely with teaching, technical and administrative staff to ensure quality teaching support;
  • Contribute to the cost-effective delivery of the Faculty’s provision at home and abroad.

1.2Research, Innovation and Enterprise activities:

  • To undertake research and scholarly activities contributing to the Faculty’s and University’s research profile. This may include participation in institutional and collaborative research and involvement with industrial, commercial and third-sector organisations or other institutions;
  • To supervise students’ scholarship and research activities;
  • To undertake consultancy as agreed and directed by the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation;
  • To undertake business development activities as agreed and directed by the Associate Dean for Regional Engagement and Partnerships.

1.3Academic Management and Administration:

  • Programme and module administration;
  • Tasks associated with student recruitment, induction and programme planning; involvement in assessment boards, course development teams, etc.;
  • Attend Faculty, Subject, programme and University wide meetings and committees as appropriate;
  • Represent the Faculty effectively in both the national and international context.

1.4General and Academic development:

  • Contribute to the implementation of the Faculty’s Academic Plan. This may include:
  • the planning and development of postgraduate and / or undergraduate provision;
  • programme / module evaluation and revision;
  • engagement with regional and international initiatives and collaborative ventures.
  • Undertake continuous professional development and participate in staff appraisal, staff development and other post-entry training based on an assessment of individual and institutional needs;
  • To undertake any other duties in the Faculty as shall be reasonably requested.

Location:

City Campus, although the role may involve requirement to deliver activity overseas therefore national and international travel may be a requirement of the role.

Attendance Requirements:

18.5 hours per week. Within this time a typical workload may include weekday evening delivery and exceptionally, weekend short course work and / or national and international travel appropriate to the nature of the role.
