1. Install a file transfer client capable of creating a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) connection. If you already have one, skip to step 2.
- Go to http://filezilla-project.org/ and download FileZilla Client (All Platforms)
- Choose the file download based upon your operating system. This manual is for Windows users so we will choose the FileZilla_3.2.7.1_win32-setup.exe. If you are on a Mac and these directions do not work, please try here http://lw.lsa.umich.edu/lsait/admin/mac/ConnectingToWindows.pdf. If you are on a Linux box, it is assumed you are too smart for this guide.
- Double-click on the .exe file and run the setup wizard. I accepted all default settings in my setup.
2. Create an SFTP connection to the UMBS server space
Note: To establish a connection you will need a University of Michigan uniqname and password. In most cases you should find you have read/write capabilities to specific directories within the UMBS directory.
- Open FileZilla (or your preferred FTP client)
- Go to File > Site Manager and click New Site. Change the New Site name to UMBS SFTP by clicking Rename. Use the following specifications:
Host: dfs.lsa.umich.edu
Port: 22
Servertype: SFTP – SSH File Transfer Protocol
Logontype: Ask for password
User: umroot/yourUMuniqname (e.g., umroot/kkwaiser)
Note the difference in Host between “l” (or “L”) and “1” (or “one”) in the Host name.
If you are unable to connect, please try this Host name:
Host: lsa-dfs1.lsa.adsroot.itcs.umich.edu
- Click Connect and enter your password
- You may be presented with this menu. Configure as follows and hit OK.
- Next, use the right-half of the screen to navigate to /Group/umbs/PROPHET/
Important Note: If you have access to a directory, you probably have read/write permissions. DO NOT DELETE OR REPLACE IMPORTANT FILES!!
3. Click on the ‘UMBS’ directory. Under this file, you will see a ‘CABINEX’ directory. Click on ‘CABINEX’ and two subdirectories appear ‘Preliminary Data’ and ‘Final Data’.
Place non-final data in the Preliminary Data folder. Files in this folder indicate that the data
may change.
Place finalized data in the Final Data folder. Files in this folder indicate that the data will not
change.
4. If you are not familiar with FTP Client software, you should continue reading. Here are the basics:
The easiest way to transfer a file is to locate it in the Explorer window and drag-and-drop it to the destination directory. This works when you select groups of files or directories.
There are two ways to be sure the transfer worked: 1) Check the destination directory for your file and/or 2) Check the “Successful transfers” tab at the bottom of FileZilla. You may need to refresh (View > Refresh) to see if a file transferred.
When you are finished, go to Server > Disconnect to break the connection.
To reconnect, go to File >Site Manager > Select UMBS SFTP > Connect
Finally, be sure to keep FileZilla up to date. It should check automatically for updates.
5. Troubleshooting
The Troubleshooting aspect of this guide will no doubt expand.
The only known problem is related to UM uniqnames that have been around a while. If you have an older uniqname and it you are unable to log-in, you may need to “synchronize” your password by going to this website: https://accounts.itcs.umich.edu/kpasswd-bin/kpasswd.cgi
Note that it if you do not want to change your password, it should work to set the New Password to you Current Password.
Any other problems, please contact Kyle ().
