Greater Monroe Kennel Club
CODE OF ETHICS
Adopted December 1998
This Code shall establish a standard of conduct to be followed by all members of the Greater Monroe Kennel club in the normal course of breeding, selling, exhibiting, and judging dogs. We recognize the difficulty of covering all situations and for this reason, any failure to comply with the spirit and intent of this Code shall be handled in the same manner as a specific violation.
As a member of the Greater Monroe Kennel Club, I agree not to sell any dog to any individual, commercial wholesaler, or retailer for the purpose of resale, nor shall I allow any of my dogs to be given as prizes in contests or exploited to the detriment of the dog.
All dogs sold as pets shall be sold on spay-or-neuter contracts and AKC limited registration. It is preferred that registration papers not be passed to the buyer until proof of spay-or-neutering is presented to the seller.
All breeding stock should be tested for known genetic defects within your breed or breeds.
All dogs offered at stud shall be in good health and free from communicable disease. Dogs known to be sterile, cryptorchids, or monorchids shall not be offered at stud. Bitches to be bred shall also be in good health and free from communicable disease. Stud owner shall inform customer of any disqualifying defects.
Puppies shall not be released to new owners before eight weeks of age.
Breeders shall guarantee the genetic health of their puppies and fully disclose any known health problems.
Breeders shall assume lifetime responsibility for all puppies that they produce. If any of their dogs become part of a rescue program, they should either assume financial responsibility for rescue expenses or resume custody of the dog.
Breeders shall provide a written contract/agreement for each sale or service, which includes any special conditions related to that sale or service.
All advertising shall be honest and not in any way misrepresentative or fraudulent.
No member shall impugn the integrity of another member or in any other way “bad-mouth” another member except in the course of bringing a violation of this Code to the Board of Directors.
Whether at home, traveling, at shows or motels all members shall conduct themselves at all times in such a manner as to reflect credit on the dog show game and the GMKC.
All members shall be given a copy of the Code when joining and by the act of joining shall signify their acceptance of this Code in its entirety. Any member then violating this Code in either content or intent shall be punished according to the severity and intent of the violation up to and including expulsion from the Club.
Any GMKC member found by a court of law to be in violation of any federal, state, city, or county anti-cruelty statue, or suspended by the American Kennel Club, is subject to expulsion from GMKC membership.
Violations of this Code shall be dealt with by the entire Board of the GMKC, which consists of the elected officers and members of the Board of Directors.
Any member suspended or expelled from the Club under the provisions of this Code of Ethics agrees to abide by the decision of the Board of the GMKC and further agrees not to seek any form of redress in a court of law from the GMKC or any of its members, collectively or individually.
Greater Monroe Kennel Club
Constitution
Article 1
Name and Objectives
Section 1.The name of the club shall be Greater Monroe Kennel Club.
Section 2.The objective of the club shall be to:
a)Further the advancement of all breeds of purebred dogs;
b)Do all in its power to protect and advance the interest of
- Dog shows
- Obedience trials
- And to encourage sportsmanlike competition at such events;
c)Conduct
- Sanctioned matches
- Dog shows
- Obedience trials, or any other AKC sanctioned companion dog or performance event, under the rules and regulations of the American Kennel Club; and to promote responsible dog ownership.
Section 3.The club shall not be conducted for profit and no part of any profits or remainder or residue from dues or donations to the club shall inure to the benefit of any member or individual.
Section 4.The members of the club shall adopt and may from time to time revise such bylaws as may be required to carry out these objectives.
Bylaws
Article I
Membership
Section 1. Eligibility. There shall be three types of membership; they shall be individual memberships, household memberships and junior memberships. Individual membership shall be open to all persons 18 years of age and older, while junior membership shall be open to all persons under the age of 18. Household membership is offered to two or more individuals who are 18 years or older, each entitled to one vote, with a maximum of two votes per household membership. All members must be in good standing with The AmericaKennel Club and subscribe to the purposes of this Club. Juniors enjoy all club privileges except the right to vote and hold an office.
While the membership is to be unrestricted as to residence, the club’s primary purpose is to the representative of the breeders and exhibitors in its immediate area.
Section 2.Dues. Membership dues shall be not more than $50.00 per year for an individual membership, $50 per year for a household membership, and $50.00 for a junior membership, payable on or before the first day of January of each year. No member may vote whose dues are not paid for the current year. During the month of November, the Treasurer shall send to each member a statement of dues for the ensuing year or a Notice of Dues may be published in the Club Newsletter.
Section 3.Election to Membership. Each applicant for membership shall apply on a form as approved by the Board of Directors and which shall provide that the applicant agrees to abide by the constitution and bylaws and code of ethics of the Greater Monroe Kennel Club and the rules of The American Kennel Club. The application shall state the name, address, and occupation of the applicant and it shall carry the endorsement of two members in good standing. Accompanying the application, the prospective member shall submit dues payment for the current year. The application may be filed after the applicant has attended three meetings as a guest.

All applications are to be filed with the Secretary and each application is to be read at the first meeting following its receipt. At the next club meeting the application will be voted upon and affirmative votes of two-thirds of the members present and voting by secret ballot at the meeting shall be required to elect the applicant.
Applicants for membership who have been rejected by the club may not reapply within six months after such rejection.
Section 4.Termination of Membership. Membership may be terminated:
a)By resignation. Any member in good standing may resign from the club upon written notice to the Secretary, but no member may resign when in debt to the club. Obligations other than dues are considered a debt to the club and must be paid in full prior to resignation.
b)By lapsing. A membership will be considered as lapsed and automatically terminated if such member’s dues remain unpaid 90 days after the first day of the fiscal year; however, the board may grant an additional 30 days of race to such delinquent members in meritorious cases. In no case may a person be entitled to vote at any club meeting whose dues are unpaid as of the date of that meeting.
c)By expulsion. A membership may be terminated by expulsion as provided in Article VI of these bylaws.
Article II
Meeting and Voting
Section 1.Club meetings. Meetings of the club shall be held each month within the Greater Monroe area at such hour and place as may be designated by the Board of Directors. Written notice of each such meeting shall be mailed by the Secretary or the Newsletter Editor at least 10 days prior to the date of the meeting. The quorum for such meetings shall be 20 percent of the members in good standing.
Section 2.Special Club Meetings. Special club meetings may be called by the President, or by a majority vote of the members of the board who are present and voting at any regular or special meeting of the board; and shall be called by the Secretary upon receipt of a petition signed by five members of the club who are in good standing. Such special meetings shall be held in the Greater Monroe area at such place, date and hour as may be designated by the person or persons authorized herein to call such meetings. Written notice of such a meeting shall be mailed by the Secretary or included in the newsletter at least five days and not more than 15 days prior to the date of the meeting, and said notice shall state the purpose of the meeting, and no other club business may be transacted thereat. The quorum for such a meeting shall be 20 percent of the members in good standing.
Section 3.Board Meetings. Meetings of the Board of Directors shall be held each month within the Greater Monroe area at such hour and place as may be designated by the board. Written notice of each such meeting shall be mailed by the Secretary or included in the newsletter at least five days prior to the date f the meeting. Written notice of such meeting shall be mailed by the secretary or included in the newsletter at least five days and not more than 10 days prior to the date of the meeting. Any such notice shall state the purpose of the meeting and no other business shall be transacted thereat. The quorum for such a meeting shall be a majority of the board.
Section 5.Voting. Each member in good standing whose dues are paid for the current year shall be entitled to one vote at any meeting of the club at which he is present. Proxy voting will not be permitted at any club meeting or election.
Article III
Directors and Officers
Section 1.Board of Directors. The board shall be comprised of the officers and three other members of the GMKC, all of whom shall be members in good standing, the four officers shall be elected for one-year terms at the club’s annual meeting as provided in Article IV. The three other members shall serve a three-year term with one member beginning a new term each year. No officer or Board member may serve more than two successive terms in the same office with the exclusion of the Treasurer who shall serve until his/her successor is elected. General management of the club’s affairs shall be entrusted to the Board of Directors.
