Teacher Apprentice Project (TAP). Research indicates K – 12 students’ understanding of mathematics and science, their ability to use it to solve problems, and their confidence and disposition toward mathematics and science are all shaped by the teaching they encounter in school. The Teacher Apprentice Project (TAP) is a win-win situation for both the Santa Maria-Bonita School District and Cal Poly. Approximately 30 undergraduate mathematics, engineering, and science students from Cal Poly will be recruited as TAP students. Their mission will ask them to work for a maximum of 10 hours per week with teachers in Santa Maria as a teacher-aide/tutor in mathematics classes grades 6th – 8th and science classes for 5th and 7th/8th grades. A grant goal is to foster the Cal Poly students into a possible path of teaching science or mathematics.

Steps for Becoming a Science and Mathematics Tutor:

1. Complete Cal Poly District Application Form as soon as you have completed your registration and mail or email forms to either Dr. Kate Riley () or Dr. Lola Berber-Jimenez (). It works best if you have a block of 4 -5 hours so you can travel to Santa Maria, tutor for approximately 3 hours, and travel back to SLO. Forms can be found at one of the following web sites:

Dr. Kate Riley's homepage http://www.calpoly.edu/~kriley/ / pick “TAP – Tutor Application Form”
Center for Excellence in Science & Mathematics Education (CESaME) http://cesame.calpoly.edu/ / pick “Teacher Apprentice Project”
Mathematics Department Web Page http://www.calpoly.edu/~math/ / On menu pick “Student Resources” then “Teacher Apprentice Project”

2. Students accepted will be given notice the first – second week of the Fall quarter. Students accepted need to complete a TB test and obtain Live Scan (finger printing) clearances.

3. Tutors are paid $14 per hour that includes 40 minutes of drive time to and from Santa Maria. We will try to pair tutors to accommodate car pooling. Depending on resources, students are limited to 10 hours of paid tutoring each week. To apply for additional hours, contact Dr. Kate Riley () or Dr. Lola Berber-Jimenez ().
