Draft Mandate of
Directors of Macroeconomic Statistics Board
I.Composition and role
1.A board of Directors of Macroeconomic Statistics will be set up in October 2012 in order to support the Directors of Directors of Macroeconomic Statistics in its tasks of:
-Identifying, discussing and providing the guidance on the most important strategic issues related to the development of macroeconomics statistics;
-Preparing, orienting and coordinating the discussions at the DMES meetings.
2.The Board will be chaired by the Director of Eurostat Directorate of National accounts, prices and key indicators, with a vice-chairman coming from a Member State. The Board will comprise a limited number of Directors responsible for prices and other macroeconomic statistics from National Statistical Institutes. It will meet regularly and will report to the Directors of Macroeconomic Statistics. The first meeting of the Board is foreseen in October 2012.
II.Specific areas of interest
3.The general aim of the Board will be to advise the Directors of Macroeconomic Statistics on important strategic decisions to be taken in relation to the Macroeconomic Statistics. It should pursue the general objective of ensuring consistency between the various sets of macro-economic statistics as well as effective coordination of policies and work in these areas. It will also address the issue of the links between national accounts and other statistics (prices, social, environmental and regional statistics), taking into account the new requirements related to the Commission Communication COM (2009) 433 final on GDP and Beyond and the Stiglitz Report.The specific areas of interest of the Group would be the following:
3.1Prepare the discussions on some issues related issues related to the development of macroeconomics statistics, which will take place in the Directors of Macroeconomic Statistics meetings.
3.2Advise the Directors of Macroeconomic Statistics on the best ways of taking into account the users’ needs.
3.3Examine the most debated questions and propose ways forward.
3.5Provide comments on the progress reports of task forces and other relevant groups prepared by the project managers.
3.6Contribute to the monitoring of the projects so that the key milestones are respected.
