On My Honor: Civics Symposium for Students 2010 Projected Scheduling for CSUSM Days

Wednesday 7/21 / Court Personnel or Attorneys needed / Projected Materials or Resources needed / Rooms/Facilities to be utilized
9:30 – 11:00
Attorney coaches meet w/student teams and discuss “questioning techniques” for deposing witnesses.
Goal: to have students critically thinking about what kind of questions will elicit the information they need to help clarify the issues. / 8 Attorney Coaches needed
2 to help teams for the plaintiff in a civil case (10 students total)
2 to help teams for the defendant in a civil case (10 students total)
2 to help teams for the prosecution in a criminal case
(10 students total)
2 to help teams for the defendant/s in a criminal case
(10 students total) / Access to SMART systems (computer, LCD projector, screen, sound) if needed.
Can be simply meeting in table groups and working w/paper outline of session discussion suggestions. / University Hall
(4th floor, 6 rooms reserved)
Parking maps, passes, directions will be sent to all guests prior to the event.
11:00 – 11:30
Attorney coaches depose a “witness” from the case modeling quality questioning techniques for the students utilizing the services of real court reporters. / (2)“Judges” who can stop the process occasionally to ask students “why”?

(2) Prosecuting Attorneys
(2) Defense Attorneys
(All coaches are invited to stay or take on one of these roles if they would like to do so.) / Access to SMART systems (computer, LCD projector, screen, sound) if needed. / 2 rooms with 20 students and 2 teachers each meet for this on the 4th floor.

Attorney coaches meet w/student teams and help jumpstart them on writing and presenting closing arguments. (Students will have computer lab time after this session to create the arguments).
Goal: to have students critically thinking about how a closing argument is constructed, what vital points should they be making, and how to build the persuasive tone. / 8 Attorney Coaches needed
2 to help teams create closing arguments for the plaintiff in a civil case (10 students total)
2 to help teams create closing arguments for the defendant in a civil case (10 students total)
2 to help teams create closing arguments for the prosecution in a criminal case
(10 students total)
2 to help teams create closing arguments for the defendant/s in a criminal case
