DOM: MARCH MADNESS PROJECT

NAME of PATHOGEN: ______

Project Coordinator: ______

Research Scientists:

  1. Detailed description of the pathogen. What kind of microorganism is it (bacteria, virus, prion)? How does it replicate? If a bacteria: what Kingdom, shape, length of generation time, psychrophile, mesophile, thermophile, pH range, anaerobe, aerobe, heterotroph, autotroph? Use ALL the different facts we’ve learned about so far in your description!

2. How is the pathogen transmitted? Does it benefit from a host, require special conditions to be passed from one person to another? Is it parasitic, mutualistic, commensalistic, synergistic? Does it require any special growth conditions? How long can it survive?

3. Where did this pathogen originate? Is this pathogen localized to one region/country/area? Was it believed to come from soil, water, insects, animals?

Give as much background as you can find on the pathogen’s origins.

4. Describe the methods that have been used to treat this disease-causing pathogen. What has been tried (existing antibiotics or antiviral drugs, new investigational treatments like antibodies or agents that target bacterial replication or viral proteins)? Has any therapy been successful? Describe any research that is being done to combat or cure this disease as well.

5. Describe the disease. How does the pathogen get into the body? What does it do to replicate in the body? What are the symptoms? How is the pathogen diagnosed (what kind of tests are done to confirm you have it)? How long is the incubation time? How long is the person infectious (can spread the disease to others)? Is the pathogen toxic, cause other body systems to breakdown or fail? What precautions must be taken when treating someone with this disease?

You and your research team are going to learn EVERYTHING that is possible to know about your chosen pathogen.

The team will do the research for each of the questions listed on the previous pages. Be certain to record ALL the reference information for EACH website your use and list the information taken from that site.

Use ALL of the information to create a 5 (FIVE) minute presentation on your pathogen. Your group may use pictures, posters, create a fact sheet handout, or create a PowerPoint presentation.

The following Rubric will be used to grade each group’s performance.

CATEGORY / 4 / 3 / 2 / 1
Required Elements / The presentation includes all required elements as well as additional information. / All required elements are included on the presentation. / All but 1 of the required elements are included on the presentation. / Several required elements were missing from the presentation.
Content - Accuracy / All of the information was accurate and documented. / Most of the information was accurate/documented with ONE minor error / TWO errors in information and/or missing proper documentation / Multiple errors in facts or documentation.
Graphics - Originality / Graphics used reflect a exceptional degree of student creativity. COLOR / One or two of the graphics used reflect student creativity. COLOR / Graphics are sparse or missing. Show moderate effort. Lacks color. / Little or NO graphics - shows MINIMAL effort made by the student to produce visual interest. Lacks color.
Grammar - Spelling / There are no grammar/spelling mistakes. / There is 1 grammar/spelling mistake. / There are 2 grammar/spelling mistakes. / There are more than 2 grammar/spelling mistakes.
Quality / Maximum curb appeal – demands your attention / Visually interesting – grabs your attention and keeps it. / Good effort but could be more visually stimulating. / Lacks evidence of proper planning and execution.
REFERENCES / MORE THAN 5 correctly listed / 5 correctly listed / 4 correctly listed / 3 or less correctly listed
INDIVIDUAL EFFORT / Each member actively made a contribution to the presentation / One person did not contribute to the presentation but all others did. / Two or more people did not contribute to the project. / The project shows very little collaborative effort, relying on one person instead.
Member Score / Did a fantastic job for our team / Worked together well with the team. / Did the bare minimum for our team. / Did not contribute to our team.

TOTAL SCORE: ______OUT OF 28 MAXIMUM POINTS
