REVISES AND SUPERCEDES:
Smoking Policy #HR-1986 with an original date of October 1987 and a revision date of December 2007 prepared by Belinda Rittenhouse, Dir. Human Resources.
POLICY:
DJWH prohibits smoking and/or the use of tobacco on all company premises in order to provide and maintain a safe and healthy environment for all employees and visitors. This policy applies to employees, patients, medical staff, visitors and vendors of DJWH.
Tobacco products are prohibited in all facilities and property used by DJWH, including but not limited to, hospital and clinic buildings and grounds, hospital owned vehicles and parking lots (including within personal vehicles parked on DJWH properties). There are no designated smoking areas on the DJWH campus.
This policy applies to all tobacco and nicotine products, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, herbal tobacco products, chewing tobacco and electronic cigarettes.

IMPLEMENTATION AND ENFORCEMENT:
Communication of this policy will be by signage at building entrances, parking areas, and reminders from staff when necessary. Patients and visitors will be notified of the policy prior to arrival whenever possible and/or during the admission process. New employees will be notified of the policy during the application process and orientation.
Everyone associated with DJWH is accountable for obeying and enforcing this policy. All employees are authorized and encouraged to communicate this policy (with courtesy and diplomacy), especially with regard to patients and visitors. Any employee, patient or guest violating the policy will be asked to discontinue using their tobacco product. Staff is authorized to approach persons using tobacco products to remind them of the policy and complete a service concern report if necessary.
Management will be responsible for notifying employees of the provisions of this policy and assisting with its enforcement. Management will confront employee violations in the same way as any other employment policy. Employees found to be in violation of this policy will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.
