The God Story – Introduction – 3-9-14

Scripture: Genesis 1.1-2, 26-2.4 (NIV)

Key Verse(s): “This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens…” – Genesis 2.4 (NIV)

Summary: We are all a part of a much larger story than the story of our little lives. Our lives are certainly important and contribute to the larger story, but God is the main character of the Great Story. This week we look at the Story’s introduction in Genesis, when God created the heavens and earth. Over the course of the next several weeks as we anticipate Easter, we will learn how every character – including us! – is connected to the great God Story.

Discussion Starters: Do you remember pretending as a child? What make-believe games did you play? Do you remember believing you were a part of something great? Do you still believe that?

Read and Discuss

Unless otherwise noted, scriptures have been researched and referenced based on the New International Version (NIV); however any translation is perfectly acceptable to use for discussion.

1.  Our story begins with creation. God’s intention for mankind was introduced in Genesis 1, but as we keep reading, mankind turned away from God in Genesis 3, thwarting God’s great plan.

·  Read Genesis 1.27-31

What do you think it was like for Adam and Eve living in the Garden in the physical presence of God? Why did God intend this for His people? Does this make you think of what heaven might be like?

2.  How does it feel to know that you are a part of a bigger story than your life?

·  Read Isaiah 55.8-13

What does this tell us about what will transpire in the world throughout this story? Does this give you comfort or make you uneasy? During this season of Lent (40 days leading up to Easter), we are encouraged to reflect on how we can draw closer to God by allowing Him to lead our lives. This is a scripture we can cling to as we strive to surrender control to God. What do you need to surrender?

3.  Who is this Great Story Teller, and why does He love us so much?

·  Read Psalm 8

·  Read Psalm 139.13-16

Verse 16 is pretty encouraging, isn’t it? God does indeed love us and weaves our lives into the Great God Story. How is God using you now to be a part of the God Story? How will you allow Him to use you?

Prayer: Father God, thank You for being the Great Story Teller. Even though we don’t understand parts of the Story, we are grateful that you use us in it. As we consider how to draw closer to You in this season of Lent, compel us with Your Story. Amen.
