Course Description: A study of coaching strategies, skills, and techniques for Volleyball that includes organization and administration of a soccer program in the public schools.
Course Objectives:
- Students will develop a personal coaching philosophy and how it relates to coaching strategies
- Students will investigate and study techniques that develop positive coaching actions when interacting with students, parents, and other professionals. This includes: Motivation, Communication, Sportsmanship, and Professional Conduct.
- Students will learn how to implement a volleyball program within a public school setting utilizing the calendar, UNIVERSITY INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE requirements, tryouts, conditioning, and administrative tasks.
- Students will learn the basic concepts of aerobic / anaerobic conditioning and how it relates to the success of a volleyball program.
- Students will learn how to effectively conduct and organize practice sessions with emphasis on individual and team skills.
- Students will learn individual and team strategies and concepts that can be implemented during practice and game situations
- Students will study / learn the rules as they pertain to volleyball in the public schools and the professional associations that publish these rules (NFHS, UIL). Students will demonstrate an understanding of these rules with testing and active officiating.

90 – 100=A
80 – 89=B
70 – 79=C
69 & BELOW= F
EVALAUATION:
20%Mid Term Exam

20%Lab Participation
Students will participate in 16 labs during the semester. These physical activities improve knowledge of
skills required to coach volleyball on a competitive level. Students will be required to dress in athletic
sports clothing for each lab. This includes shorts/sweats, t-shirt, socks, and court shoes.
20%Class Activitiesand Homework Assignments
Students will participate in 13 classroom activities aimed towards improving knowledge and understanding of the sport and the development of coaching skills.
Students must completetwo online homework assignments. These are available online at the NFHS Coaching Education website. The student will turn in a certificate of completion for each course onWednesday, April 3, 2013 to the instructor. Students are not allowed to choose a course previously completed in another class. Choices are:

“The Role of the Parent in Sport”
“Sportsmanship”
10%Coaching Assignments
Students will be assigned 2 coaching duties during the semester in which he / she will instruct others.
A grading rubric will be provided by the instructor.
10% Project – Book Report
Each student will be assigned a book to read that pertains to sport. The student will present an oral book report in the form of a power point presentation to the class. The student must show a relationship to the book and his/her own coaching philosophy. Book Report Presentations: April 1st and 3rd.
A grading rubric will be provided by the instructor.
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance in class is mandatory. An absence or the inability to participate during a lab will result in a zero.
Late arrival to a lab will result in a 25 point reduction for every 15 minutes the student is not present.
Assignments, class activities, quizzes, or labs missed because of an absence or tardy will not be made up.
It is the responsibility of the studentto secure information when he/she is absent and recover any material or assignments that may have been missed because of an absence or tardy. Since most grades will be given daily, each individual is strongly encouraged to attend on a regular basis and in accordance with North Texas University policy.
CELL PHONES:
Cell phone use is NOT permitted in class or labs without the approval of the instructor.
COMMUNICATION: Students can view grades, notifications, and a calendar of events on BLACKBOARD. The class syllabus and outline is also posted along with links for outside reading.
