MATH: These past weeks, the students have learned about prime and composite numbers, perimeter, and area. We also did digit detectives with multiplication. The students really have to know their “stuff” to be able to figure out missing digits in multiplication problems.
Next week, we will begin division.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Unit 3 in Wordly Wise will be completed during the upcoming week. Therefore, there will be a test on it Fri., Sept. 28.
The students have been reading non-fiction material in their social studies books. Additionally, the students have practiced highlighting the evidence in their Time for Kids magazines that substantiates answers on a test.
For English, the students have been working on identifying sentence fragments, run on sentences, and combining/expanding sentences. In the coming weeks, we will be learning 8 different rules for making plurals. This will be combined with our spelling work.
SOCIAL STUDIES: The maps and globes unit is finished. Our class average on the test was an 89% . W O W!
We began readings in our textbook on the Native Americans. Students should focus on gaining knowledge about each of the tribes’ foods, clothing, and shelter. This is a direct offshoot of the maps study we just completed. The tribes will be located on our map. The available resources and climate of each region will help the students determine how the tribes obtained the items they needed in order to live.
We should finish up with the Native American readings next week. The students will be doing a project at home that will require a shoe box. Please locate one for your child. If you do not have any, please let me know and I will bring in some from home. As shoes are a particular weakness of mine, I have plenty of boxes.
PICTURE DAY: An envelope was sent home in the Friday folder this week to tell you about our picture day. It will be a bit different this year because pictures are to be pre-paid. If you are not satisfied with them, your money will be refunded.
Our picture day is scheduled for Mon., Oct. 1.
ABSENCES: If your child is absent, and you would like their work for the day and any homework assignments at the front desk for pick up, please let me know by e mail the morning of their absence. I will make every effort to have it compiled and placed in the front office by the end of the day (around 3:00). As always, there is a day’s grace for each day of an excused absence. All absences need a written excuse note from you on the day your child returns to school.
EARLY PICK-UP: If possible, please let me know by e mail or note in the morning if you are picking your child up early. This allows me time during the day to pull papers together that your child may require and let them know which books are needed for homework.
HELPER PARENTS: For 9/27, helper parent will be Mindy Gurr; on 10/4, it will be Naomi Hansen; and on 10/11, JeanAnn McCarthy.
SNACK PARENTS: For 9/28, snack will be provided by the DeBoer family; on 10/5, it will be the Deluryea family; and on 10/12, the Dobbins family.
.
