Report of Activities of the ANOCA President for ANOC
Important activities have been initiated by the new ANOCA Executive Committee since the elections held in Djibouti on 10 May 2017. :
1. 52nd Session of the ANOCA Executive Committee
ANOCA held an ordinary session of its newly elected Executive Committee on 1 and 2 August in Abuja. This meeting was held over two days due to the number of important points on the agenda. Our work was marked by very relevant interventions, in a very serene atmosphere.
The ANOCA vision and strategic development plan for the 2017 – 2020 mandate were analysed and approved.
2. 2017-2020 Budget
The Executive Committee approved the 2017 – 2020 quadrennial budget items. Priority was given to athletes’ support and continental events.
3. Support of African athletes
The Executive Committee approved the allocation of a one million dollar financial envelope for the preparation of African athletes for the next Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020. Following the remarkable results of African athletes at the Rio Olympic Games, it became imperative to grant them more important financial support , in order to assist them in their preparation for the next Olympiad.
It is anticipated that an ad-hoc Commission will be created in the very near future to implement the recommendations of the Abidjan forum, held on 20 and 21 April 2017.
4. Zones Support
At its 52nd Session in Abuja, the Executive Committee reiterated the principle of increasing the annual financial support for the zones. It will now be of 50,000 dollars. Previously, the budget was 20,000 US dollars. This initiative is intended to help the NOCs of various zones to initiate more sport development programmes and to involve more youth in the practice of sport activities.
5. African Youth Games Algiers 2018
A coordination and evaluation commission was held in Algiers on 24 and 25 May 2017. The meeting was attended by representatives of ANOCA, UCSA, the African Union and the local Organising Committee. Participants examined and analysed the general rules and the technical regulations for the Games. A time table was determined. The persons responsible for the Games and representatives of the various sport confederations concerned visited the various approved sports venues. Most of the infrastructures are ready.
6. African Games
The date of 2 October 2017 will remain etched in the history of the African Olympic Movement. It marks the finalisation of a historic agreement with the African Union. The AU entrusts the organisation and management of the African Games to ANOCA. The UCSA will be responsible for the technical aspects. The final agreement will be signed in the very near future.
This agreement demonstrates the strengthening of our relationship with the African Union, serving the development and popularisation of sport in Africa and the flourishing of youth.
7. Beach Games
On the occasion of the 33rd Secretaries General Seminar help in Cape Verde from 12 to 14 October 2017, we had a very productive discussion with the Cape Verde Sports Minister, who reiterated the will of his government to host the Continental Beach Games in 2019.
Accommodation sites and competition venues were visited. The Games contract was finalised and will be signed before the end of December 2017.
8. New ANOCA Headquarter in Abuja
On the occasion of the 52nd ordinary session of the Executive Committee in Abuja, an inspection visit of the new headquarter was organised. Work is underway, and is progressing at a good rate. The headquarter is expected to be delivered in the first trimester of 2018. We received firm commitments from the company in charge of the construction, in the presence of representatives from the Sports Ministry which has released the necessary financial resources.
9. 33rd Secretaries General Seminar
The 33rd Secretaries General Seminar was held this year from 12 to 14 October, 2017 in Sal, Cape Verde Islands. This year’s theme was rich in content. It focused on the implementation of the 2020 plan. Attendees discussed various performance indicators and evaluation tools to reach set objectives. The seminar concluded with the reading of recommendations which constitute strong proposals.
