Kate Hunt – Personal Statement

I believe Graphic design is not just about drawing pretty little pictures to entertain the public. It is a very strong method of communication, which can be both revolutionary and innovative. For many years development that has built the modern world has consisted of rebellion and risk. Risk taking is essential to creative designers, such as Bansky, who literally takes risks to create his art and leaves his comfort zone. Bansky uses skills of drawing, wit and stencilling to create art, which makes people think and have their own opinions on his work. This really influences me, and I believe this is fundamental to graphic design.

When something catches my eye in public, whether it is a multimedia advertisement or a still image, it always shows meaning and has a background story to it. My work targets this sector of design; I don’t like to create something without any reason behind it. Yet I still like to produce a concept with a twist, something that leaves the public wondering and wanting to know more.

During my time at secondary school I studied BTEC Art and Design; this was when I experienced design and made the choice that a wanted to become a part of the design industry. I began to build my knowledge and understanding of a designer’s perspective and gained an insight into a designer’s profession by visiting Clarks International Graphic Design Studios. There they gave me their opinions and observations on life in a design business, they also taught me how they develop their briefs and meet tight deadlines.

.

Within the BND Graphic Design course at college, I have built many portfolios within different areas of design such as product design, communication and advertising, 3D modelling and typography incorporating photographic techniques, print making, paper craft, life drawing. I have also incorporated the use of Apple Imac computers with the Adobe CS5 package into many of my projects. I aspire to be like the graphic designer Jullien Vallee as he uses traditional paper craft techniques and computer generated art.

I have been involved in various live briefs, such as a production of Sweeney Todd at the Octagon theatre in Yeovil. I am currently producing many of my college’s sports advertisements which successfully promote the sports facilities.

My desire to become a Graphic Designer grew as I learnt more of what to expect within the design profession. Yes it was an interest at school and I have been interested in Art since when I was introduced to it as a child which is why I chose to do BTEC Art and Design, but once I got a thorough insight into design I really knew it was what I wanted to do and once I learnt this, I put everything into being successful through using portfolios, journals, websites and producing multimedia animation clips.

I am very ambitious; I play badminton competitively for my college. Recently I have played at Truro, against all south west colleges. I also have achieved a variety of awards from Yeovil Swim Team where I swam in the ASA Sprinting awards against various towns and counties. These are things I enjoy in my free time yet I strive to compete and achieve to the highest I possibly can.

Going to university would enable me to fulfil a life long ambition and achieve greater qualifications, which will then give me the potential to obtain a secure and well paid job within the graphic design industry. It would enable me to develop my designs and concepts and it will increase my skill level to allow me to succeed in chosen areas within Graphic Design.
