This course prepares the student to clinically apply the beginning theory and procedures of Respiratory care in the hospital setting. This course is required by all students. Prerequisites: RAST 115, RAST 115L, RAST 120 and RAST 120L; Offered: Occasionally

Learning Outcomes:

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Identify the equipment and perform an assessment of the patient's cardiopulmonary status through interviewing and assessment techniques.
  2. Interpret written protocols and algorhithms, and their practical applications when the appropriate clinical data is gathered.
  3. Demonstrate the use, operation and safety of compressed gas cylinders, cylinder regulators and medical gas administration devices.
  4. Demonstrate set-up, application and principles of operation of oxygen delivery devices and understand the indication for use and their therapeutic objectives of oxygen therapy.
  5. Demonstrate set-up and understands the indication for use and the therapeutic objectives of a medicated nebulizer.
  6. Demonstrate evaluation and application of bronchial hygiene therapy, including chest physical therapy, incentive spirometry and IPPB.
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of airway management, and understand the anatomy, indications, contraindications and hazards of procedures related to airway management
  8. Demonstrate performance of arterial blood gas sampling and understand the indications, hazards and complications of performing the procedure.
  9. Demonstrate knowledge of isolation, and equipment processing procedures in order to protect self and/or the patient from spread of infection.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge, application and evaluation of a Small Patricle Aerosol Generator (SPAG), as the indications, complication and contraindications of Virazole (Ribavirin).
  11. Demonstrate set up, application and principles of operation of a pulse oximeter.
  12. Demonstrate knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
