This qualification is for people who want to work as a child-care worker or child care assistant in centre-based day care.The role of workers is reflected in a range of early childhood education settings. They support the implementation of an approved learning framework and support children's wellbeing, learning and development. Depending on the setting, educators may work under direct supervision or autonomously.

Course delivery
/ On the job and off the job and can be delivered face-to-face, flexibly or mixed mode
Commitment required
/ Undertake a minimum of 100 days in paid employment plus the formal training to complete the qualification.
Undertake Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30113as part of your HSC. This course represents a significant commitment towards the required HSC units.
The employment and training can be undertaken during school time, after school and during school holidays.
How will you be assessed? / Both on the job and off the job through written tests, project work & practical exercises.
Eligibility for ATAR / HSC Unit Credit:
Early Childhood Education and Care course / No / 8 units over two years towards your HSC for the structured training component (VET course) undertaken as part of the school based traineeship.
Industry-based Learning course (optional) / No / This optional course is offered as recognition of the significant work component involved in the school based traineeship.
If undertaken this course offers an additional 4 units credit towards your HSC, however this course does not contribute towards the ATAR.

To ensure the maximum safety for children in care and students alike, the following requirements must be met by all employers of NSW School Based Trainees in the Early Childhood Education and Care sector:

  • The School Based Trainee is not included in the necessary client: staff ratio of the employer
  • The employer has a risk management policy and procedures guideline in place for staff which includes staff under 18 years of age
  • The School Based Trainee is not to be left alone and/or unsupervised whilst caring for children
  • The School Based Trainee is not to be employed as a primary contact staff member
  • The School Based Trainee is not left to close up the facility or be responsible for opening the centre
  • The School Based Trainee must not transport children by themselves
  • The School Based Trainee is not to undertake duties outside those directly related to working with children. For example, the trainee is not to undertake other kitchen hand, clerical or general cleaning duties
  • The School Based Trainee is to be supervised by an appropriate Children’s Services worker at all times. The trainee must work to an appropriately qualified mentor/supervisor on site at all times they are in the workplace
  • Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (or earlier equivalent qualification)is the minimum mentor or supervisor qualification
  • The arrangement is to be closely monitored by State Training Services STS field staff.

Employers should provide the student’s school with written agreement to the above requirements before the School Based Traineeship is registered.
