Math 9 – Unit Assignment (Transformations Project)B
  • Your assignment grade for this unit will be largely based on a booklet showing your understanding ofsymmetry and scale.
  • Your task is to use locate pictures of objects that show symmetry and scale. You may use the Internet, magazines, newspaper flyers, etc.
  • Locate pictures that have NOT been used as examples during class.
  • Look for a variety of pictures within each category for best results.
  • Sketches, outlines and geometric shapes do NOT show acceptable understanding – they MUST be pictures of actual objects.
  • Look for pictures that will meet the following criteria:
  1. Symmetry – line symmetry (3), rotational symmetry (3) and no symmetry (3)
  1. Scale – enlargements (2) and reductions (2).
  • You must also be able to identify the actual size of the objects so that you can calculate both the scale and scale factor of the pictures.
  • You will also complete scale enlargements and reductions of given figures on a separate sheet.

Marking Criteria

Line Symmetry

Ominimum of 3 pictures that show linesymmetry

Ovariety of pictures (horizontal, vertical, oblique) that wereNOT used in class

OOOfor each picture, draw the line(s)of symmetry.

No Symmetry

Ominimum of 3 pictures that show no symmetry.

Ovariety of pictures that wereNOT used in class

Rotational Symmetry

Ominimum of 3pictures that show rotational symmetry.

Ovariety of rotational symmetry pictures selected that wreNOT used in class

OOOeach picture must have a different order of rotation.

OOOfor each picture, calculate both the angle and the order of rotation.

Scale

Otwo pictures chosen are enlargementsthat wereNOT used in class

Otwo pictures chosen are reductionsthat wereNOT used in class

OOOO Show ALL the necessary steps to calculate scale for each object.

OOOO Show ALL the necessary steps to calculate scale factor for each object.

Drawing Scale Factor

OOUse a scale factor of 4 to copy and enlarge one small geometric shape

OOUse a scale factor of to copy and reduce one large geometric shape

Oa ruler is used to neatly construct the images
