PC 6.10-1 Education provided is appropriate to the patient’s needs.

PC 6.10-2Assessment of learning needs addresses cultural and religious beliefs,

emotional barriers, desire and motivation to learn, physical or cognitive

limitations, and barriers to communication as appropriate.

PC 6.10-3As appropriate to the patient’s condition and assessed needs and the hospital’s scope of services, the patient is educated about the following:

  • The plan of care, treatment, and services
  • Basic health practices and safety
  • The safe and effective use of medications
  • Nutrition interventions, modified diets, or oral health
  • Safe and effective use of medical equipment and supplies when provided by the hospital
  • Understanding pain, the risk of pain, the importance of effective pain management, the pain assessment process, and methods for pain management
  • Habilitation or rehabilitation techniques to help them reach the maximum independence possible

PC 6.30-2Education is coordinated among the disciplines providing care, treatment,

and services.

PC 6.30-3The content is presented in an understandable manner.

PC 6.30-4Teaching methods accommodate various learning styles.

PC 6.50 The hospital provides academic education to children and youth as needed.

PC 8.60-4The hospital offers education on grooming activities based on each patient’s needs (Hospitals with Behavioral Health Units).

PC 11.10Patient and family educated about restraint use, if appropriate (non-psychiatric care).

NPSG 3E-10Patient/family education includes the importance of follow-up monitoring, compliance issues, dietary restrictions, and potential for adverse drug reactions and interactions for anticoagulant therapy. (1/2009)
