POSITION STATEMENT (Please limit to 2 – 3 paragraphs):

We are currently witnessing a sea change within the US healthcare system and the cardiovascular arena is no exception. Despite the uncertainty about where we are headed and how we will get there, I remain confident that our cardiovascular team will weather this storm successfully so long as we continue to forge and maintain partnerships across providers, specialties, institutions and professional societies. In Michigan, our diverse array of physicians, cardiac care associates, and fellows are well aligned and well positioned under the umbrella of a strong, well-organized and superbly led ACC Michigan Chapter. We are frequently cited as an example to other states for our innovative quality initiatives, successful educational endeavors and well-organized advocacy efforts. As President of the Michigan Chapter, I would hope to build on these tremendous successes to ensure that our cardiovascular patients continue to have access to high-quality, appropriate and cost-effective care.

I would propose that we do so in the following ways:

Quality

·  Support national ACC quality initiatives such as Imaging in Focus and Hospital to Home (H2H) here in our state, enabling us to continually bridge gaps between the evidence base and our clinical practice, and provide a model for value-based reimbursement strategies for payers.

·  Capitalize on the wealth of data available from Michigan’s mature statewide cardiovascular quality improvement registries.

Education

·  Grow our annual Chapter meeting, one of the most well organized and successful in the country.

·  Work toward developing a shared cardiovascular educational platform to be utilized across Michigan’s medical institutions, including lectures and other resources for cardiovascular associates, fellows and cardiovascular physicians.

Advocacy

·  Build and maintain close connections between our cardiology workforce and our congressional leaders through the ACC’s annual Legislative Conference and other important grassroots efforts.

·  Support national ACC advocacy efforts in delivery system, imaging, physician payment and FDA reform, and in seeking greater funding for cardiovascular disease prevention and research efforts.

It would be an honor to lead our Chapter locally and to represent us nationally on the ACC Board of Governors.
