Assignments

Homework Assignments

See course outline for a listing of homework assignments and their due dates.

Reflection Papers (3)

Over the course of the semester, students will submit three (3) reflection papers. Each paper should be one page (double-spaced) in length and answer the writing prompt provided below. Reflection papers will be graded on the quality of content and grammar using the rubric provided by the instructor. Students are expected to sincerely reflect on their experiences at Baylor and their decision to pursue a major in nursing.

Prompt 1 (Due September 12): About which parts of attending Baylor are you most excited? About which parts of college are you most anxious or fearful?

Prompt 2 (Due October 31): Reflect on your visit to the Louise Herrington School of Nursing and Dallas. Was it what you expected? What did you learn about the nursing profession and/or being a nursing student? Can you see yourself living in Dallas and being a student at LHSON in two years?

Prompt 3: (Due November 21):What have you learned from the NUR 1101 course? What plans or strategies do you have for the next year to prepareyourself to be a successful nursing student?

Interview with practicing nurse (November 3rd)

For this assignment, students will need to meet in-person with a currently practicing nurse and interview her/him about their nursing education, job responsibilities, and work/life balance. The instructor will provide students with an interview protocol to assist you with the interview, but students are also encouraged to add their own questions. As evidence of learning, students will submit a three (3) page paper (double-spaced) that summarizes what they learned about the nursing profession from the interview. Students should use direct quotations sparingly and synthesize the “take-aways.” First person pronouns are permissible. Students should use APA formatting for this assignment.

Nursing Specialties Project (December 1st)

Students will work in groups of two (2) to create a poster and/or handout to present to the class about one nursing specialty. Topics will be picked no later than October 31st. Each group will have 5 minutes to teach the class about their specialty. Students are encouraged to use online sources, professional organization statements, and personal interviews to gather information about their specialty. A reference list in APA format should also be submitted at the time of the presentation. Students should use a minimum of three sources.

Field Trip to Dallas (October 24th)

All students enrolled in NUR 1101 are required to attend the field trip to Dallas. The cost of the trip will be $15, which includes transportation and dinner. If a student cannot attend for an approved reason, the student will be responsible for interviewing both a current LHSON faculty member and a nursing student to learn more about the nursing school experience. The student should submit a two (2) page reflection paper summarizing the interviews.
