*Now Fully WfH Accredited*
Programme of free, volunteer led
Health Walks
We are pleased to present our Gt. Yarmouth ‘Go Active’ Summer / Autumn walks programme for 2015.
ABOUT OUR WALKS – The walks are designed for the person who is looking for another friendly, enjoyable way of exercising and keeping fit. Most of the walks are between 2.5 – 3.5 miles with the odd slightly longer one thrown in for those fit and game enough to have a go at the more challenging distance. Do not worry if you are not the fastest walker. All walks are staffed by trained volunteers with a leader at the front and a ‘back marker’ who will keep the slowest participants company. Nobody will be left behind! The walks have for some, become regular social occasions and usually conclude with the walkers heading for the nearest café or other ‘watering hole’ for well-earned refreshment. We also have the occasional ‘Bring & Share’ picnic walk!
As we are now a fully accredited member of the national Walking for Health scheme, the duration of our walks complies with WfH requirements. These are:
- A walk should last no longer than 90 minutes
- We should include a walk of between 10 – 30 minutes at least once a month. This can be part of a longer walk.
GRADING – Our walks are graded according to distance and degree of challenge. One footprint denotes an easy, shorter walk whereas three or four footprints represent longer more challenging routes. If you are joining us following advice from a medical or exercise professional, it would be advisable to discuss with them, the walks most suited to your individual needs and physical capabilities.
N.B. We have included and shown 10-30min options within our programme. Look for the walks marked with a clock symbol.
CAR PARKING – All walks have been planned to begin near car parks or convenient roadside parking. However, as these walks have become ever more popular, parking has sometimes been challenging. To help to alleviate this problem, car-sharing is always welcomed. Please bear in mind that the volunteers or organisers assume no responsibility for car parking. Parking safely remains the responsibility of the participant.
HOW DO I JOIN? – Just check the dates and venues on the timetable and simply turn up and make yourself known to one of the volunteers who will be conspicuous by their clipboard and high visibility waistcoat. All we ask that you do is to fill in a simple ‘one off’ Registration Form which will ask for some details of your health. If you have any health issues that you feel may affect your suitability for the scheme, then please consult your GP before joining us.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? – Fair or foul weather, the walks go ahead! Try to ensure you have comfortable clothing that will keep you warm and dry in the winter and cool in the summer. A hat may be advisable in sunny conditions! Wear footwear that will keep your feet dry in wet, muddy environments and will also prevent you from slipping and sliding. It’s simply a matter of watching the weather and using common sense. Some of our walkers do regularly use a trekking pole to help keep a firm foothold and steady balance, particularly on soft or rough terrain.
ANYTHING ELSE? – If you are likely to require medication or remedies for such conditions as asthma, angina or diabetes, please ensure you have it with you. Also, a bottle or flask of water could be helpful in warm conditions.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – These walks are possible, thanks mainly to the unselfish efforts of our Volunteer Walk Leaders. Without their help, it is highly unlikely that the scheme in its present form, would survive. We desperately need more helpers. If you are able and willing to assist us, please speak to one of our Walk Leaders.
DOGS – Well-behaved dogs have always, for the most part, been welcome on our walks, provided that they are on a lead andunder the FULL control of the owner. Obviously we expect the owners to always clear up after them should the need arise. Please be aware that not all the walks are regarded as ‘dog-friendly’. We have some routes that may take us through fields containing cattle and also some, such as Winterton Marrams, provide a wonderful habitat for adders – unlikely to cause walkers any problems, but an inquisitive dog may not be so fortunate. Also, please bear in mind that not everybody is a dog lover and some people may be disturbed by their presence. Please enquire as to the walk suitability before bringing your pet!
PROGRAMMES – Sometimes people drop out of the scheme for a while but rejoin at a later date if they are able to access an up to date programme. A current programme will be accessible on the Walking for Health website:
CONTACTs - Any queries, please contact Jemma Parker. If she cannot answer your questions she will pass you on to one of our volunteers who should be able to help. Tel. 01493 744411
