Short Story Final Performance Task

What is my end goal?

Your goal is to create a short story. You will be able to choose the format in which you produce your short story, but you are responsible for meeting the expectations on the rubric.

Your final story has to be able to demonstrate that you can do the following:

  • I can create a story where there is a central conflict in the story that is established through the point of view of the narrator in the story
  • I can create a story which uses dialogue, pacing, description, reflection, plot development in order to develop experiences, events, and characters
  • I can create a story where the events build on one another in order to create a complete story
  • I can create a story that uses precise and vivid language in order to convey a vivid picture about the experiences, events, and characters
  • I can create a story that correctly uses conventional grammar and spelling conventions

What does it have to look like?

You have a few choices to choose from:

  • Written story (max. 5 pages, double spaced)
  • Short movie
  • Story Board (Series of pictures and events)
  • Cartoon
  • Something else…
  • *Your product has to be 100% yours- any evidence of copying, tracing, etc. will be considered plagiarism*

  • Class this week only (Lots of Brainstorming)
  • Home, HALO, After-school

Step 1: Setting / Wed. Oct. 7 @ 9p.m.
Step 2: Character / Thurs. Oct 8 @9 p.m.
Step 3: Plot / Fri. Oct 9 @9 p.m
Step 4 & 5: Writing &Edit / Fri. Oct. 16 in Class

Step 1: Setting Investigation and Description

Where is your story going to take place?

1- Brainstorm of locations and ideas from class:

2- Search for different setting locations: Disney World, mountains, Pacific Ocean, desert, Bronx, India, Australia, etc.

3- List the different words you used when searching:

4- Copy and Past three images into a Google Doc

  • Under each image list 7-10 adjectives that would describe each of the places

5- Choose one image and write two descriptive paragraphs in the same document

  • Use some of the adjectives, be creative, have fun with using words- concentrate only on the setting

6- Share your final document to

Step 2: Character Development

Who is going to be in your story?

This can all be done in the same Google Doc

1- Brainstorm major changes a character goes through in a story AND adjectives to describe a character:

2- Search for images either online using the adjectives or go through the available magazines

3- List the different words you used when searching:

4- Choose 3 Images and put into a Google Doc

5- Under each Image list 7-10 objects that the character might own

6- Choose 1 character who could be your protagonist and write two descriptive paragraphs which can include answers to the following:

  • Who is this character?
  • What does this character do for a living?
  • What are the character’s hopes and fears?
  • Where does the character live?
  • What is most important to the character?

7- Make sure that you have shared this document

Step 3: Plot Development

What’s going to happen in your story?

This can all be done in the same Google Doc

1- Brainstorm of what your character wants the most:

2- Is your character going to get what he/she wants?

3- What or who is going to stand in the way of your character?

4- How is the setting going to help or possibly stop the character?

5- What is one desire of your character?

6- What are three obstacles the character will face?

7- Make sure that you have shared this document

Step 4: Writing

How are you going to compose your story?

It is now your chance to take all of the information that you have done and create a short story.

Step 5: Editing

Does your story meet all of the requirements?

Have multiple people look at your story. I will look at a draft as long as I get the draft by October 13th.
