WCSD ART STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLASTIC ART AWARDS

More than 120 WCSD high school students participated in the 2011-2012 Scholastic Art Awards presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. Forty-four students received Gold Key and/or Silver Key Awards, and one is an American Visions Nominee. Gold Key recipients’ artwork has been judged as demonstrating the highest levels of achievement in technique, originality, and personal voice. Silver Key recipients have submitted artwork demonstrating achievement worthy of recognition on the regional level. Regional Affiliates nominate five Gold Key artworks as “Best of Show.” These works are reviewed in a special adjudication for the American Visions Award. One National American Visions Award recipient is recognized from each region, and their artwork will be showcased in New York City. National Award winners are also invited to New York City to receive recognition at Carnegie Hall as part of the annual National Awards Ceremony.

At the local level, award recipients will be recognized in a ceremony at the McKenna Theater at SUNY New Paltz on Friday, February 10, at 7:00 p.m., with a snow date of February 11. The winning artwork of God Key and Silver Key Award recipients will be displayed in the Exhibition of Student Work from February 10 to February 23 at SUNY New Paltz in their Fine Arts Building. This exhibition will be open to the public.

“The journey of our young artists begins with their exposure to the arts in elementary school. This high level of achievement is an example of the power of school and community relationships in the sustained support of the arts,” said André H. Poprilo, district coordinator for Fine & Performing Arts and Second Language.
