THE KING AND HIS KINGDOM

The abundance of Old Testament prophecies concerning Christ and His kingdom provide overwhelming evidence to its importance for man’s salvation. The Old Testament gives us a traceable lineage from the Jewish nation, to a particular tribe, and finally narrowed to one family. The New Testament reveals that Christ is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Let’s take a Biblical journey to see Christ and His kingdom in promise, prophecy and fulfillment.

The King would come from the nation of Israel

  1. The promise made to Abraham (Genesis 12:3; Galatians 3:8; 16).
  2. The promise made to Isaac the child of promise (Genesis 26:4; Galatians 4:23; Genesis 17:15-19).
  3. The promise made to Jacob (Genesis 28:14 [Israel] Genesis 32:28) who would have twelve sons, which became the twelve tribes of Israel (Genesis 49:28).
  4. “I shall see Him, but not now: I shall behold Him, but not nigh: there shall come a star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel...” (Numbers 24:17).
  5. “Where is the King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him” (Matthew 2:2). See Revelation 22:16; Isaiah 60:3.

The King would come out of the tribe of Judah

Genesis 49:10; Hebrews 7:14; Revelation 5:5; Micah 5:2; Matthew 1:3

The King would come from the family of David

  1. The root of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1; 10; Jeremiah 23:5; Romans 15:12).
  2. The seed of David (II Samuel 7:12-13; I Chronicles 17:11-13; Psalms 132:11; Isaiah 16:5; Romans 1:3; Matthew 1:1; Luke 1:30-33; Acts 2:30).
  3. The last king to sit on the physical throne of David was Zedekiah in 586 B.C. – for over 600 years the throne laid in ruin unoccupied by anyone. God said; “After this I will return and build again the tabernacle (lineage or seed) of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up. That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things” (Amos 9:11-12; Acts 15:13-17).

The King came into the world

  1. The angel Gabriel’s message to a startled Mary (Luke 1:30-33).
  2. The angelic announcement to the shepherds in the field (Luke 2:7-14).
  3. The promise to Simeon (Luke 2:25-35; Isaiah 42:6; 49:6-8).
  4. The mission (Isaiah 61:1-2; Luke 4:18-21).
  5. The triumphant entrance into Jerusalem (Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 21:1-11).

The Kingdom established

  1. God revealed when the kingdom would be established (Daniel 2:36-44; Matthew 3:2; 4:17), even to the very day (Mark 9:1; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; 2:1-4).
  2. The kingdom would be spiritual, the King would rule from heaven (John 18:36; Acts 7:49; Psalms 89:35-37; Acts 2:30; I Peter 3:22).
  3. The saved are in the kingdom (Colossians 1:13; Hebrews 12:28; Revelation 1:9; I Corinthians 15:24-26).
