COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is a hands-on independent investigation of practices associated with exhibitions and portfolio development. Art 299 may be taken for .5 to 3 credit hours per semester and is repeatable up to 12 hours. For this course students will actively participate in the production of “Interart” an on going exhibition series that will take place in the foyer of GTA. For this course students are put in the role of Assistant Director of the series. Through this independent study, students participate in bringing an exhibition to fruition. They learn basic bookkeeping, how to write and organize information for artist bios and press releases, basic graphic design processes associated with exhibits and how to develop effective curatorial strategies. Finally, they learn how to create and organize visual information into a portfolio that represents their experience in Special Topics in Studio Art: Exhibitions.

GOALS OF THIS COURSE:

  1. To develop an understanding of the basic vernacular in gallery related disciplines.
  2. To learn how to design advertisements for artists and exhibitions.
  3. To practice organizing information on and writing about arts events.
  4. To learn how to constructively analyze and discuss individual works of art and entire exhibitions with sophistication.
  5. To develop curatorial strategiesfor real exhibitions
  6. To install, present and document art in a professional manner.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

This course is conducted as an independent study. The students set biweekly meeting times with me to discuss assignments and review completed projects. When it is time for curating and installing the exhibitions the student and instructor will work together in the Greenhaw Gallery.

ASSESSMENT:

Students will be assessed by their participation in the INTERART group show (50 points), an INTERART solo show (50 points) and their completion of an exhibit portfolio (50 points). There are 150 points possible for the entire course.
