This Guide Specification is intended to aid the Design Professional in specifying and detailing Umicore Building Products USA Inc. VM ZINC® ADEKA®, DEXTER®VM DEXTER ZINC® PLUS , Flat Lock , and Corrugated roofing systems. corrugated It is the responsibility of the Design Professional to verify that all conditions, materials, means and methods are properly addressed and meet the requirements of local building code officials and jurisdictions.

This document includes hidden text with comments to the specifier with respect editing recommendations. .

1.2  SUMMARY

  1. This Section includes the following sheet metal roofing:
  2. Factory Formed and Field Assembled VM Zinc®VM ZINC® Zinc alloy ADEKA®, DEXTER®VM DEXTER ZINC® PLUS, and Flat Lock, and Corrugated Standing-seam metal roofing.

1.3  PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

  1. General: Provide complete VM Zinc®VM ZINC® Zinc alloy sheet metal roofing system, including, but not limited to roll formed metal roof pans, cleats, clips, anchors and fasteners, sheet metal flashing and drainage components related to sheet metal roofing, fascia panels, trim,wood battens, skip sheathing, underlayment, and accessories as indicated and as required for a weather tight installation.
  2. Installation: All VM Zinc®VM ZINC® sheet metal roofing systems and materials shall be installed using the best available industry standards and the means and methods recommended in the manufacturer’s published information, or whichever is more stringent.
  3. Wind-Uplift Resistance: Provide complete roofing system including roll formed sheet metal VM ZINC® roofing capable of resisting the design pressures indicated. Provide clips, fasteners, and clip spacing of type indicated and with capability to sustain, without failure, athe design loads. Design loads shall be established by the design professionals responsible for the project and local code requirements. load equal to at least three (3) times the design uplift pressure.

Design professional shall verify the following performance requirements

  5. Thermal Movements: Provide sheet metal roofing that allows for thermal movements resulting from the following maximum change (range) in ambient and surface temperatures by preventing buckling, opening of joints, hole elongation, overstressing of components, failure of joint sealants, failure of connections, and other detrimental effects. Provide clips that resist rotation and avoid shear stress as a result of sheet metal roofing thermal movements. Base engineering calculation on surface temperatures of materials due to both solar heat gain and nighttime-sky heat loss.

Design professional shall verify the following values

  1. Temperature Change (Range): 120 deg F (67 deg C), ambient; 180 deg F (100 deg C) material surfaces.120 degF (67 degC), ambient; 180 degF (100 degC), material surfaces.
  2. Water Infiltration: Provide sheet metal roofing that does not allow water infiltration to building interior, with metal flashing and connections of sheet metal roofing lapped to allow moisture to run over and off the material.

1.4  SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For each product indicated. Include details of construction relative to materials, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes.
  2. Shop Drawings: Show fabrication and installation layouts of sheet metal roofing, including plans, elevations, and keyed references to termination points. Distinguish between shop- and field-assembled work. Shop drawings to be reviewed and approved by VM Zinc® EngineeringUmicore Building Products USA, Inc. prior to fabrication. Include the following:
  3. Details for forming sheet metal roofing, including seams and dimensions.
  4. Details for joining and securing sheet metal roofing, including layout of fasteners, clips, and other attachments. Include pattern of seams.
  5. Details of termination points and assemblies, including fixed points.
  6. Details of expansion joints, including showing direction of expansion and contraction.
  7. Details of roof penetrations.
  8. Details of edge conditions, including eaves, ridges, valleys, rakes, crickets, and counterflashings.
  9. Details of special conditions.
  10. Details of connections to adjoining work.
  11. Details of the required accessory items.
  12. Sheet metal roofing and attachments.
  13. Roof-mounted items including roof hatches, equipment supports, pipe supports and penetrations, lighting fixtures, snow guards, and items mounted on roof curbs.
  14. Samples for Verification: For each type of exposed component required, prepared on Samples of size indicated below:
  15. Sheet Metal Roofing: 12424 inches (6300 mm) long by actual panel width, including finished seam. Include fasteners, cleats, clips, battens, closures, and other attachments.
  16. Trim and Closures: 124 inches (6300 mm) long. Include fasteners and other exposed accessories.
  17. Accessories: 124-inch- (6300-mm-) long Samples for each type of accessory.
  18. Snow Guards: Full-size Sample.
  19. Qualification Data: For firms and persons specified in the “Quality Assurance” Article to demonstrate their capabilities and experience. Include lists of completed projects with project names and addresses, names and addresses of architects and owners, and other information specified.

1.5  QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Installer Qualifications: Engage an experienced installer who has completed sheet metal roofing similar in material, design, forming method and extent to that indicated for this Project and with a record of successful in-service performance. Provide evidence of installer participation in VM ZincUmicore Building Products USA Inc.® PRO-ZINCroZinc Training Course.
  2. Sheet Metal Roofing Fabricator Qualifications: Shop that employs skilled workers who custom-fabricate sheet metal roofing similar to that required for this Project and whose products have a record of successful in-service performance. Provide evidence of installer participation in VM ZincUmicore Building Products USA Inc.® PRO-ZINCroZinc Training Course.
  3. Sheet Metal Roofing Standard: Comply with VM Zinc®VM ZINC® Architectural Binder, Installation Manual, or industry best standards, whichever is more stringent. Conform to dimensions and profiles shown unless more stringent requirements are indicated.
  4. Mockups: Before installing sheet metal roofing, construct mockups for each form of construction required to verify selection made under Sample submittals and to demonstrate aesthetic effects and qualities of materials and execution. Build mockups to comply with the following requirements, using exposed and concealed materials and forming methods indicated for completed work.
  5. Locate mockups in the location and of the size indicated or, if not indicated, as directed by the Architect.
  6. Approval of mockups is for other material and construction qualities specifically approved by Architect in writing.
  7. Approval of mockups does not constitute approval of deviations from the Contract Documents contained in mockups unless such deviations are specifically approved by Architect in writing.
  8. Approved mockups may become part of the completed Work if undisturbed at time of Substantial Completion.

Consider retaining paragraph and subparagraphs below if roofing installation is large or complicated. A preliminary siding conference would precede a pre-installation conference and focus on roof structure and framing construction and planning activities of roofing Installer.

E.  Preliminary Roofing Conference: Before starting roof framing and sheathing construction, conduct conference at Project site. Review methods and procedures related to roof framing and sheathing construction and metal roof panels including, but not limited to, the following:

1.  Meet with Owner, Architect, Owner's insurer if applicable, testing and inspecting agency representative, metal roof panel Installer, [Umicore Building Products USA Inc.’s representative], structural-support Installer, and installers whose work interfaces with or affects metal roof panels.

2.  Review and finalize construction schedule and verify availability of materials, Installer's personnel, equipment, and facilities needed to make progress and avoid delays.

3.  Review methods and procedures related to metal wallroof panel installation, including manufacturer's written instructions.

4.  Examine support conditions for compliance with requirements, including alignment between and attachment to structural members.

5.  Review flashings, special siding details, roof penetrations, openings, and condition of other construction that will affect metal roof panels.

6.  Review governing regulations and requirements for insurance, certificates, and tests and inspections if applicable.

7.  Review temporary protection requirements for metal roofwall panel assembly during and after installation.

8.  Review wallroof panel observation and repair procedures after metal wallroof panel installation.

Pre-installation conference is recommended with or without preliminary siding conference above.

  1. Pre-installation Conference: Conduct conference at Project site. Review methods and procedures related to sheet metal roofing including, but not limited to, the following:

  1. Meet with Owner, Architect, Roofing Consultant, Owner's insurer if applicable, sheet metal roofing Installer,[Umicore Building Products USA Inc.’s representative]VM Zinc(r)’s representative, and installers whose work interfaces with or affects sheet metal roofing including installers of roof accessories and roof-mounted equipment.
  2. Review and finalize construction schedule and verify availability of materials, Installer's personnel, equipment, and facilities needed to make progress and avoid delays.
  3. Review methods and procedures related to sheet metal roofing installation.
  4. Examine substrate conditions for compliance with requirements, including flatness and attachment to structural members.
  5. Review flashings, special roofing details, roof drainage, roof penetrations, equipment curbs, and condition of other construction that will affect sheet metal roofing.
  6. Review governing regulations and requirements for insurance, certificates, and testing and inspecting if applicable.
  7. Review temporary protection requirements for sheet metal roofing during and after installation.
  8. Review roof observation and repair procedures after sheet metal roofing installation..

1.6  DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

  1. Deliver all metal roofing elements and componentsmetal coils, sheet metal roofing pans, components, and other sheet metal roofing materials so as not to be damaged or deformed. Package sheet metal roofing materials for protection during transportation and handling.
  2. Unload, store, and erect sheet metal roofing materials in a manner to prevent bending, warping, twisting, and surface damage.
  3. Stack materials on platforms or pallets, covered with suitable weather tight and ventilated covering. Store metal coils andsheet metal roofing materials to ensure dryness. Do not store metal coils orsheet metal roofing materialsroofing components or elementss in contact with other materials that might cause staining, denting, or other surface damage.
  4. Protect strippable protective covering on sheet metal roofing from exposure to sunlight and high humidity, except to extent necessary for period of sheet metal roofing installation.

1.7  COORDINATION

  1. Coordinate installation of roof curbs, equipment supports, and roof penetrations.
  2. Coordinate sheet metal roofing with rain drainage work, flashing, trim, and construction of metal decks, sheathing, purlins and rafters, parapets, walls, and other adjoining work to provide a leak proof, secure, and non-corrosive installation.

The specifier shall verify current warranty conditions with manufacturer at the time of product specification.

1.8  EXPRESS LIMITED COMMERCIAL PRODUCT WARRANTY

LIMITED WARRANTY COVERAGE: VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS USA INC.® Inc. (“VM ZINCUmicore Building Products”) warrants to the Owner (as defined in Section 2 below) that VM ZINC®VM ZINC® sheet and coil (the “product”) was delivered to the original purchaser free from defects in manufacture so that when used for its intended purpose and properly installed according to VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS’s published installation instructions, the Product, for a period ending Twenty Five (520) years after the date of original shipment by VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS (the “Warranty Period”), will not perforate due to corrosion resulting from any manufacturing defect. If during the Warranty Period any Product proves to have a manufacturing defect which causes corrosion that results in perforation of the Product, VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS, in its sole discretion, shall, at its option, repair, restore or replace the defective portion of the Product, at no cost to the Owner; provided however, that in lieu of repair, restoration or replacement, VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS reserves the right to reimburse the Owner for resulting losses up to the original purchase price paid to VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS for the defective portion of the Product, excluding any amounts paid for installation of the Product. If the Owner cannot establish the original purchase price, VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS shall determine the cost in its sole and reasonable discretion.

VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS’s repair restoration or replacement of the defective portion of the product or reimbursement pursuant of section A of this warranty shall be the sole and exclusive remedy available to the owner with respect to any defect.

LIMITED TRANSFERABILITY: This Warranty shall run to the benefit of the Owner of the structure located at: ______(the “Project”) and any subsequent owner of the Project provided that written notice of such ownership transfer is provided to VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS® within thirty (30) days of the date of transfer (the “Owner”), but shall not be otherwise assigned, transferred or sold in any manner whatsoever. Any attempt to assign, sell or transfer this Warranty to anyone other than the Owner shall immediately terminate this Warranty and all of VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS’s liability hereunder.

EXCLUSIONS: This Warranty does not cover, and neither VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS nor any manufacturer shall have any liability for, damage or defects resulting from or in any way attributable to: (a) improper storage, handling or installation of the Product (including, without limitation, failure of the Product to be installed in strict compliance with the terms and conditions set forth in Section 4, C, of this Warranty) or improper installation of studs framing or other accessories; (b) neglect, abuse or misuse; (c) repair or alteration; (d) settlement or structural movement and/or movement of materials to which the Product is attached; (e) incorrect design of the structure to which the Product is attached; (f) foreign objects; (g) acts of God, including, but not limited to, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes or other severe weather or natural phenomena; (h) airborne pollutants, such as acid rain; (I) efflorescence or performance of paint/coatings applied to the Product at any time, or lack thereof; or (j) any other cause not involving manufacturing defects attributable to VM ZINCUMICORE BUILDING PRODUCTS or the manufacturer of the Product. This Warranty does not cover white rust, discoloration or the Product or other cosmetic defects or any other defects in the Product other than a manufacturing defect which results in corrosion.
