LIN 514 – HW 1 – NEW date: 1 February 2016

Elly van Gelderen

This HW covers chapters 1 to 3. If there’s something we haven’t covered in class, you will find it in these three chapters. The chapters discuss `traditional’ grammar (categories, phrases, functions, finiteness, and case morphology), the generative model, and c-command. I’ll try to include most here. It is a way for me to see what levels you are at and, especially for the last questions, various levels of complexity are possible and ok!! So, don’t worry too much; just try to do the best you can.

Regarding chapter 1:

1.Can you say anything about the setting of the headedness and the pro-drop parameter in (1)?

(1)man diruz be sinamā raft-am
Iyesterdaytocinemago-1S

`I went to the movies yesterday.’

Regarding chapter 2:

2.In the text below (the beginning of the 2016 State of the Union address) identify the complementizers (aka subordinating conjunctions) and the prepositions. Circle the finite verbs too.

9:10 P.M. EST

Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, my fellow Americans:

Tonight marks the eighth year that I’ve come here to report on the State of the Union. And for this final one, I’m going to try to make it a little shorter. (Applause.) I know some of you are antsy to get back to Iowa. (Laughter.) I've been there. I'll be shaking hands afterwards if you want some tips. (Laughter.) And I understand that because it’s an election season, expectations for what we will achieve this year are low. But, Mr. Speaker, I appreciate the constructive approach that you and the other leaderstook at the end of last year topass a budgetandmaketax cuts permanentfor working families. So I hope we can work together this year on some bipartisan priorities likecriminal justice reform-- (applause) -- and helping people who are battling prescription drug abuse and heroin abuse. (Applause.) So, who knows, we might surprise the cynics again.

Regarding chapters 2 and 3:

3.In the same text, I have underlined seven phrases. Say what they are (PP, DP, TP, CP, etc) and what their function is (Subject, Object, Adverbial, Modifier, etc).
