Revolutionary War Patriot Remembered

The Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) honored Revolutionary War Patriot Peter Baird (Beard) by installing a brass marker at his grave in Grace Rocky Hill Lutheran Church cemetery (formerly St. Peter's Rocky Hill Lutheran Church) on Coppermine Road in Woodsboro earlier this month.

Patriot Peter Baird (Beard) served as a Corporal in Captain Joseph Wood, Junior’s Company of the Maryland Militia in 1775; as an Associator in December 1775, and as a Juror to the Oath of Allegiance in 1778. Peter Beard’s Frederick County, MD will dated January 5, 1793, named his wife Catherine, and his six children in the following order: Jonathan (his eldest son, deceased), Catharine Hartsock, Margaret Hartman, Madelana Hartsock, Jacob Beard and Elizabeth Beard.

SAR Compatriot Larry Bishop, Chair of the SAR Chapter’s Patriot Grave Marking Committee, states: “232 years have passed since the Treaty of Paris in 1783, marking the conclusion of the fight by the Colonies for independence from Great Britain. Our local SAR chapter sponsors an on-going program to locate and mark the final resting place of those who participated in the struggle for freedom.”

The Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter of the Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution is a patriotic, historical and educational society, whose members are direct descendants of the Patriots who earned our nation’s independence.

Pictured are (L-R): Bruce French, Pat Barron, SAR Chapter President Donald Deering, Eugene Moyer, Pastor Ann Schlossnagle, SAR State President James F. Engler, Pastor Dahl Drenning, Ronald Harbaugh, Dr. George E. Lewis, Jr., Larry Bishop, and David Embrey.
