Buffalo Soldiers Visited Summit Christian Academy
(Lee’s Summit) - Mrs. Ruth Terry’s History class is currently studying a chapter on “American History, Transforming the South & West in the late 1800’s.” A new parent to SCA, Pastor Greg Washington, is the Chaplain for the Alexander Madison Chapter of the Kansas City area. Pastor Greg Washington put Mrs. Terry in contact with Trooper John Bruce, who graciously scheduled a presentation for her classes.
Trooper Bruce, Lena Bruce, and Donna Madison presented the Buffalo Soldierstory to Mrs. Ruth Terry’s Sophomore History classes. During their presentation, they explained the creation of the black units, how they dressed, their heroic contributions, and how they were named the Buffalo Soldiers. Although there are many myths on how the Buffalo Soldiers got their name, one aspect holds true. The Buffalo Soldiers have gone down in American military history as some of the proudest soldiers of all. The students responded with enthusiasm and respect to this opportunity to interact with our history face-to-face.
Upcoming units in Mrs. Terry’s class will include the 1920’s – 1930’s, and she would welcome any speakers regarding Kansas City during this period. If you are interested or know of someone who would like to present, please contact Mrs. Terry via e-mail ().
