The Importance of Addressing Trauma, Violence, and Sexuality in Substance Abuse Treatment for Women: Alison Hamilton, Ph.D., UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs

Dr. Hamilton will first review treatment strategies that have been developed specifically for women. She will highlight the ways in which these strategies address issues relating to sexuality, trauma, and violence. Then, she will discuss findings from her in-depth study of women methamphetamine (meth) users in Los Angeles County residential treatment facilities. Almost half of the participants described their histories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), by a variety of perpetrators. All of these women described engaging in multiple sexual risk behaviors which they attributed to their meth use and their CSA histories. They all reported being victims of adult violence, and 77% also reported perpetrating violence as adults. Three women described suicidal thoughts or attempts related to their CSA experiences, and many others described mental health issues related to childhood trauma. Dr. Hamilton will discuss the implications of these findings in light of evidence-based treatments that are currently available, and she will suggest that treatment approaches need to more deeply consider the impact of sexuality, violence, and trauma on women’s recovery efforts.

A Provider’s Introduction to Substance Abuse Treatment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals: Thomas E. Freese, Ph.D., UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs

Dr. Freese will present a detailed overview of a training curriculum developed by the Prairielands ATTC and based on A Provider’s Introduction to Substance Abuse Treatment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals, published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The curriculum was created to “translate” A Provider’s Introduction into a training experience with visual aids and opportunities for discussion and practice. The curriculum is intended to provide both practitioners and administrators involved in substance abuse treatment with: (1) increased familiarity with the issues and barriers faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in need of substance use disorder-related services; (2) knowledge about the interaction between LGBT issues and substance use and abuse; and (3) enhanced ability to offer sensitive, affirmative, culturally relevant, and effective treatment to LGBT clients in substance use disorders treatment.

The lecture will also feature two panel discussions with LA County-based providers and clients. Time will be made available for questions and group discussions with audience members and panelists.
