Surf Kayak Skills Development Course

5th - 6th April, 2014

Clifton or Park Beach (Southern Venue, TBC depending on weather/swell conditions)

Canoe Tasmania in conjunction with Tracy Gibson from Jervis Bay Kayak Co, and current Women’s World Surf Kayak Champion, will conduct a 2 day Surf Kayak Skills Course from a venue close to Hobart depending on surf conditions forecast for the weekend. This is an exciting opportunity for paddlers of varying skills levels, to get some first class professional instruction in the dynamic sport of Surf Kayaking.

Affiliated Canoe Club members (DCC, TCC, TasCC): $150
Non-members: $200

Times: 9am – 4pm Saturday, 8 am – 1 pm Sunday

This 2 day progressive course will include:

·  Instruction on Body Movement in relation to kayak control (trimming, planning and engaging the rails)

·  Surf kayak outfitting – seat belt set ups and fin positioning etc

·  Paddling out techniques

·  Positioning in the line up and take off to maximize effort and for best speed and control dropping into a wave

·  Carving techniques

·  Linking turns

·  Cut-backs

·  Lip Manoeuvres

·  360’s

·  General reading of waves.

·  Depending on level of the group, also bracing and rolling in the surf as well.

Note: There is an option to just attend on the Saturday only, if attending for 2 days is not viable for some people.

The course will commence at 9am on Saturday 5th April. Participants will be advised closer to the date the exact meeting venue (either Park Beach at Dodges Ferry or Clifton Beach, depending on surf conditions).

The course will conducted by Tracy Gibson from Jervis Bay Kayak Co. Tracy is the current Women’s World Surf Kayak Champion and also an Australian Canoeing qualified Sea Kayak Instructor & Assessor. Leigh Wighton from Kayak 4 Play (AC qualified Whitewater Instructor, Whitewater Rescue 2, and AC Assessor) will be assisting.

Participants must have all of their own equipment (there may be some limited options to hire some gear), and some prior kayak paddling experience in moving water.

Participants need to bring:

·  Suitable Kayak for surf (eg short nosed, flat hulled playboat, surf kayak or waveski). If using playboat or surf kayak, then stern buoyancy bags and front/rear grab ropes/toggles required for safety in event of a wet exit in the surf.

·  Paddle, PFD, spraydeck and a helmet.

·  Cag or windproof spray jacket

·  Suitable paddling footwear (wetsuit booties, sandals)

·  Warm paddling clothing/wetsuit

·  Lunch, drinks and snacks
